There's More To Greenville Than We Think

It has been said that there isn't a lot to do in Greenville, NC, other than party or attend ECU. This past year I explored quite a bit and found that there is a wide variety of things to keep you occupied as a student. Here are some of my favorite below:

1.) Greenway
The Greenway runs along the tar river. My favorite stop along the Greenway is next to the dog park located near the Tar River Estates.

2.) Disc Golf Course
Greenville's Disc Golf course is located within North Campus Recreation facilities. The course is marked with maps beside each hole.

3.) Greenville Museum of Art
The Greenville Museum of Art is free for all visitors and is located downtown on Evans street.

4.) Town of Washington
Commonly known as "Little Washington," this small town located along the Pamlico river is a nice escape from Greenville. There are restaurants where you are able to eat on the river.

5.) Pitt County Farmers Market
Pitt county farmers market runs from March through December on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Fridays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This serves to support local farmers within the community.

6.) Eat at the Scullery
Ask any pirate what their favorite breakfast/brunch place is, and they always say the Scullery.

7.) Uptown Greenville First Friday of Greenville
The First Friday ArtWalk is when galleries showcase new exhibits. First Friday is also an opportunity for restaurants to give their customers deals! Many local restaurants have discounts and specials on First Fridays. If desired, you can hop on the Greenville trolley for the full tour around the city.

8.) Dog Park
Whether you own a dog or not, the Greenville dog park is surround by the South Tar River Greenway, which measures around 3.1 miles. It is a nice place for a run or walk, while you pass by all the cute dogs on your way to and from the Greenway!

9.) River Park North
River Park North is a nature park where you can partake in a few different activities including fishing, camping and boating. The park is located near the Pitt-Greenville airport.

10.) Barefoot on the Mall
This event takes place every spring and usually has a live performance. Last year, MKTO performed, along with plenty of free food and activities for students to indulge in and take a break before finals began.

11.) ECU Campus Recreation and Wellness rentals
The Campus Recreation and Wellness center offers rentals from bikes and camping to sea kayaks. You can rent all of these items for under $20 and take them out on the Tar River.

12.) Boutiques in Greenville
Catalogue Connection, Fedora, Bevello, The Closet Consignment, Che Bella are all boutiques that are located in Greenville, NC. Greenville even has its own Lilly Pulitzer store called Pink!

13.) Greenville Town Common
The Greenville Town Common is located uptown along the Tar River with a huge bridge. This is often where free concerts and festivals are held in Greenville.

14.) Freeboot Fridays
Freeboot Fridays are free to all and include live music and various arts and crafts. Restaurants offer drink and food specials around downtown Greenville.

15.) Sup Dogs
When visiting Greenville, eating at Sup Dogs is a must! With the wide variety of choices from chili, bacon cheese fries, to tons of hot dogs, it satisfies the tastes of everyone in the group.

16.) Purple and Gold Pig Skin Pig Out
ECU makes this event into an entire weekend leading up to the annual Spring Game. A pig cookin’ contest is held every year to compete for the title of best BBQ. Other events that take place during this weekend include a Parade of Pigs, movie night, and the opportunity to meet the ECU football team.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
