Yellow Springs, Ohio: A Hidden Treasure

While I love the University of Dayton bubble, I am disappointed in myself that it took me until my final year of college to explore the greater Dayton area. There is a variety of things to do aside from weekend trips to the Greene, day drinking, or eating on Brown Street. One of my favorite places to visit when I want a change of scenery is Yellow Springs, Ohio. Located just 30 minutes away from campus, with its colorful buildings and liberal undertones, Yellow Springs is a small town with magnetic charm. The shops are by definition unique as there are no chain stores, and the offbeat community embraces the arts with music, galleries, and murals. All it takes is one visit to this creative community to become hooked on the friendly atmosphere.

1. The Scenic Hiking Trails

Yellow Springs is home to a number of beautiful hiking trails. Glen Helen Nature Preserve with its waterfalls, wildlife, trails and watercourses offers a beautiful route. John Bryan State Park, with trails that connect to Clifton Gorge is another recommended route for nature lovers. There are friendly hikers along the trails, yet it is possible for one to feel as though they have the entire magical forests to themselves.

Tips: There is a lack of signage along the trails so be sure to download the trail map that is online or pick up a map at the visitor's center. Also, wear comfortable shoes for rocky, slippery, or muddy paths and don't forget to bring your camera!

2. The Diverse Selection Of Shops

Yellow Springs has an assorted collection of shops. Most are locally owned and include handmade items. Some stores also offer imported clothing, jewelry, pottery, and stained glass items. Amongst the wide-range selection of items, individuals are bound to find something no matter what their style is.

Tips: Ladies that embrace the boho clothing trend-- the stores Wildflower Boutique and Kismet are sure to be right up your alley. Another favorite of mine is Asanda Imports with items from Bali including jewelry, bags, scarves, accessories, home goods as well as women and children's clothing.

3. The Cozy Coffee Shops

The coffee shops in Yellow Springs are a must stop for coffee lovers while visiting. Each locally owned shop offers a variety of blends that will leave you craving more.

Tips: Dino's Cappuccinos is known for their consistently delicious espresso brew. The Spirited Goat is another must see: the interior is colorful, cozy, and serves some of the best coffee I've ever had. This coffee shop also offers live music and open mic night.

4. The Yummy Eats

If you want quality food, expertly and creatively prepared, then the restaurants in Yellow Springs are a must try. Many of the cafes serve only locally grown food, so dishes are guaranteed to be fresh and satisfying for all foodies out there.

Tips: At Haha Pizza, the pizzas made with fresh whole wheat dough and the eclectic topping choices make each bite a heavenly experience. It is important to note that nothing at Haha Pizza happens quickly. There is a wait from the order to the checks. The place marches to the beat of its own drum so its a recommended stop for those who are not in a rush.

5. The Arts

Known for being a creative community, Yellow Springs is brimming with the arts. There is a variety of murals, live music performances, festivals, and galleries to visit when passing through this town.

Tips: Emporium Wines is where the locals gather for live music and wine tasting every Friday night from 6:30-10 p.m. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the murals located throughout the town.

6. Dave Chappelle

Yellow Springs is where the actor Dave Chapelle resides and fans might just unexpectedly run into him strolling the streets or supporting one of the town's local businesses.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.
