Trying New Things III: Cryotherapy

The weather has been absolutely perfect this week. Spring is here, and the trees are green and full of flowers, and the air is finally warm again.

To celebrate, I decided to go freeze my butt off. Almost literally.

After years of shoulder pain and limited mobility because of it, I decided to try an alternative method to gain some relief: cryotherapy. This process involves entering a chamber with a nitrogen-based cooling system to lower the body's temperature to fight ailments such as inflammation, soreness, fatigue and for me, lingering injuries. The process lasts from as little as one minute, and up to three minutes for the warriors.

Here's the kicker; they blast temperatures that go from -200 to as low as -400 degrees Fahrenheit.

And you're naked.

To satisfy my death wish curiosity, I visited the Ice Out Cryospa in west Omaha. The whole place is decked out in soothing blue decor with nature videos playing on a TV in the lobby. To my surprise, it was PACKED. There were three people waiting when I arrived and six more came in after me. Zach, my refrigerator guru (as I called him) told me they had over fifty people the day before. I told him that was cool and immediately regretted the horrible pun.

For safety reasons, men have to wear underwear, but for women clothing is optional, and everyone has to wear these sexy white Hanes knee-high socks, slippers and wool gloves so we don't freeze our digits off. I walked into the "salon" with a robe on and this opposite-outfit and looked at the Cryochamber, which honestly looks like a tanning bed that someone turned vertical.

I stepped in, removed my robe and Zach turned the chamber in to a tropical -160 degrees Celsius (which is -256 degrees Fahrenheit).

The overall sensation wasn't that bad. My knees began stinging about two minutes in, and I had to dance around so I didn't fall over from nerves, but Zach talked me through it and told me how cryotherapy gained popularity in - shocker - Beverly Hills. If celebrities do it, then everyone must want to do it.

The result has been strange and incredible. My shoulder isn't completely healed, but some of the daily dull pain has ebbed away and I had a nice little energy amp in the two days that followed. Those three minutes of biting, seemingly endless cold have paid for themselves.

I'd definitely go again. I've thawed out by this point.

PS - Ice Out even has a Groupon for their services going on right now!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
