Everyone went crazy when Snapchat released their new Selfie lenses back in September of last year. This allowed users to apply different filters that adhered to their face while taking pictures and video and stories were filled with people's mouths puking rainbows, exploding heart eyes, wrinkled faces and monstrous faces. Since then, people have been using these filters non-stop. The thing is, these facial lenses are not as new as you think and they're not originally Snapchat's.
Well, now it is the property of Snapchat because they bought Looksery, the developers of the face-modifying technology. According to their website, Looksery itself was founded back in 2013 and launched their app in 2014. Their application (B2C) allowed you to do basically the same thing you can do on Snapchat but with more filter options. B2C allowed you to slim your face down, change your eye color, or, as Looksery says, "transform into a 3D animated avatar" as you messaged others.
Looksery was centered around creating a program that could alter and transform the look of your face in real time. They did it with special programming that could track the movement of your facial expressions and the shape of your head. This allowed you to move your face and have the filter move along with it. Now, Snapchat owns this high-tech accessory that everyone can't seem to keep from using, and I see it as a well-spent investment, looking at the fact that they bought Looksery for a whopping $150 million, according to Business Insider.
Looksery's App Compared to Snapchat
The Looksery app B2C is no longer available, so the only way to access the filters is by using Snapchat. Although, there are other apps out there that use similar technology, it isn't the same. People seem pretty happy with Snapchat's choice of bringing in an additional element to keep the application new and exciting.
