I'm A "Duff" And I'm Proud

Most people see being a duff as a negative, but I disagree.

Most people have probably seen the movie "The Duff," or heard of the term, but for those of you who have not, "duff" stands for the "Designated Ugly Fat Friend." Even though the connotation of this term is fairly derogatory, I am here to tell you that being a duff is not all that bad.

You are an integral part of the friend group.

There are an abundance of different roles that a person can take in a friend group, but there is only one duff. The duff is the glue that holds everyone together. You are the irreplaceable clog that keeps your group running.

There are no expectations about your appearance.

People are so focused on your friends and how they look, no one really cares about what you wear. There is no pressure to try to live up to societal standards of beauty because you know that you are already there.

There are no social obligations.

You have grown accustomed to going wherever your squad goes, so when it comes to your individual social life, there is no reason to worry about finding your own parties to go to.

There is less drama because your friends don't feel the need to compete with you.

A lot of drama can be attributed to the fact that girls are insanely jealous creatures. So, as the duff, when your friends have no reason to be jealous, there is no reason for any unnecessary drama.

Your social skills are well rounded because you have gotten used to talking to guys for your friends.

"Is that a wiener in your mouth or are you just happy to see me?"

Personally, I have shut down many boys for the sake of my friends, so when the time comes that I need to do it for myself, I will have that on lock.

Guys you actually talk to aren't just looking for a hook-up.

People know you are not the hookup type, so you do not have to worry about bad intentions when getting dates.

Your friends trust you.

You are the go-to in the group for whenever anyone has problems. You are an amazing listener and care about your friends, so they cannot help but trust you.

Everyone knows that you are the real MVP.

You are the best and funniest person in your friend group. You are amazing and confident and are the irreplaceable life of the party. So go and be your confident duff self and have a great life.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
