Letter To Delta Gamma, Eta Sigma From Your Disaffiliated Sister

Letter To Delta Gamma, Eta Sigma From Your Disaffiliated Sister

In the midst of all our recruitment mayhem, I had to take the time to write a letter to my sisters, who make everything I do involving Greek life, worth it.

Dear Delta Gamma sisters,

By the time this article goes live, I will be officially reunited with my sorority for the first time since May 5. I’m writing this over the span of working with the rest of the Panhellenic Exec board to run formal CofC recruitment for fall 2014. It’s been a wild ride, so far, and it’s only the beginning of philanthropy day. Every day, I’m getting more and more used to not being with my sisters during this crazy intense time, but it still feels strange.

I just want you all to know how proud I am of our chapter. I may not be able to walk by our house this week, or wave at you beauties, but I know that y’all have been killing it, striving to bring in the best pledge class we’ve ever seen.

During convocation for the potential new members, I told them that Greek life has made me a better person. Cliché but true, and I owe it all to you, my sisters. I also told them that if I had known, five years ago, where I would be today, I would never have believed it. I don’t think anyone even knows how true this is. When I did tours of prospective colleges while I was in high school, I recoiled when the tour guides would mention Greek life. It was never even a twinkle in my eye. During my freshmen year, as I gradually met sorority women and fraternity men, I realized that there were some pretty darn amazing people in these organizations. Naturally, a lot of those were Delta Gammas.

Guys, I’ve gone through recruitment as a potential new member, as an active sister and, now, as a disaffiliated executive member -- which has been the most rewarding. I’m helping so many women find their new home, and I’ve also gotten to reflect on how amazing the past two years have been since I was one of those women finding her way. Y’all are ones who are there for me when I’ve cried. You’ve been the ones who’ve pulled me through the stress, and made me laugh when that was the last thing I thought I could do. You’ve all enriched my experience in Charleston, whether you realize it or not. I owe more to y’all than you’ll ever know.

In some ways, I’m kinda mad at you guys, because you’re also the reason why graduating this upcoming spring is going to be about 5,000 times harder for me. I am very very tempted to stay in Charleston and be a crazy alum who tries to sneak into the back of chapter meetings. Stay tuned for this.

Joining as a sophomore was a pretty risky thing to do, but I wouldn’t have chosen a different path if I could. I love my non-DG friends, the girls I bonded with before classes even started. These are also the girls who went through recruitment with me, in 2012. I’m so happy that we all chose what was right for us, and that we’re all still close friends. I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to get to know them if I had done recruitment as a freshmen. I also wouldn’t have been in the best pledge class ever, class of fall 2012!

Basically, I just want to say, I love you guys. Thank you for proving me wrong about Greek life, and for being the sisters I never had growing up.

Love,
Lindsey

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
