Do you find your foot tapping up and down to Pharell's latest chart-toppers? Do you hear yourself singing along to music on KIIS FM every time it echoes throughout the walls of the store or restaurant you're working at this summer to make a little extra college spending money? Do you analyze the lyrics to a given song by taking its setting, characters, and/or overall subject matter into account? Wait…what?!
Several college students, and people in general, aimlessly purchase "catchy" songs which are blared incessantly at social events, online, in the car, or on TV without pondering what exactly gave the artist or songwriter the idea to publish a potentially famous hit out of which type of noise a fox would make, for example. And who can blame them if they simply want to entertain themselves with something upbeat in any spontaneous moment while making their friends laugh? Occasionally, if a song repeats itself or has lyrics which are vulgar enough to capture even a kindergartener's attention, you may hear comments questioning its popularity. Yet, you seldom hear individual lines being scrutinized by people or hear them talking about how the ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend the song is addressing may react after knowing that a song is written about how horrible he or she is. This article seeks to put forth a new perspective regarding some of the songs which inch their ways up weekly on the iTunes "Top Singles" list.
1. "Rude" by Magic! - This song talks about an individual who is asking his girlfriend's father for permission to marry her. When the father denies this request, the main character in the song asks him why he has to "be so rude," or, I'm sorry, "ru-u-ude" to be precise, and emphasize how inconsiderate and bothersome the father is being. Well, has anyone ever considered how the dad might respond to this? What if the potential son-in-law doesn't have-oh, I don't know a job?! What if he is a disgrace to the girl's family because he belongs to the wrong political party? What if he is so rude himself to the dad that he is not wanted around the house for eternity? What if he cheated on the daughter?! Gasp. With this many details left out of the song, you're losing credibility here, Mr. Singer/Songwriter, or whoever you are.
2. "Am I Wrong?" by Nico & Vinz - Pretty self-explanatory. The main character in this work is asking whether he is making a wrong decision regarding his lot in life. However, at the beginning of the song, he flat out admits that he is avoiding copying everyone else and later concludes by stating, "That's just how I feel." Well, if you are attempting to be your own person, then, why does it matter if others disagree with you? If you are expressing your feelings, then no amount of logic can rationalize them or get rid of them altogether. Trust me, we've all tried. Why is it necessary to gain someone else's point of view, if you are merely venting? That sort of detracts from the word "vent" itself.
3. "Black Widow" by Iggy Azalea - Your typical love/hate confusing relationship seductive song. I really only have one question about this riveting piece of music. Why would you compare someone in which you are romantically interested and/or involved with to a disgustingly frightening spider?! Gross.
4. "Stay With Me" by Sam Smith - This song may lure audiences in due to its soft, legato melody and overtones of enamorment. Yet, I cannot help but to give one measly critique. If the song begins with the line, "Guess it's true, I'm not good at a one-night stand," and a "one-night stand" is not acknowledged as intimate by most people, why would you expect this person to be your partner for life? I certainly am not saying that I advocate one-night stands, but you kind of set yourself up for failure on that one if you have never before met this person and are, consequently, unfamiliar with her morals.
5. "Chandelier" by Sia - Admittedly, I have found myself rocking out to this song. As enjoyable as it sounds to swing from this expensive and visually aesthetic piece of home decor, I am pretty sure that you would be sued for a lot of money for breaking it, especially if you are engaged in reckless partying behavior, as mentioned at the beginning of the song.
I hope that this analysis has given you some food for thought and some giggles to save for the next time you hear these 2014 summer anthems!
