In moving to a college town in my home state of New York, I never imagined I would experience such a culture shock. Western New York is very unique. People in Buffalo are very particular, especially when it comes to their food. As an out of towner, you will be forced to familiarize yourself with the language, and all of the locals' favorites of the city...and in your freshman year, you will likely be cursed with the Freshman 15.
- You drink soda, not pop.
- You’re not a Bills fan and you refuse to hop on the bandwagon.
- You prefer Taco Bell over Mighty Taco and have no intention of converting...What’s a buffito?
- You properly obey the laws of the road.
- You’ve never experienced all four seasons in one day.
- You don’t get why everyone is obsessed with chicken finger subs.
- There’s a subway?
- You’ve never been to Niagara Falls.
- You refer to chicken wings as Buffalo wings.
- You refer to “suckers” lollipops.
- You’re a Dunkin’ Donuts girl and damn proud of it.
- You had to be introduced to Wegman’s.
- You’re grossed out by sponge candy.
- You thought Loganberry was an actual berry.
- You expect your college/university to have snow days.
- Roast beef on what?
- You’ve never celebrated Dyngus Day.
- You’ve never skated canalside.
- You didn’t realize that there are suburbs in Buffalo.
- You’ve never had a Jim’s SteakOut sub, a hotdog from Ted’s, a taco at ETS, a late night calzone from Calios or Anderson’s Frozen custard.
- You’ve never hopped the border for a legal night out in Clifton Hill.
- You’ve never had food from a food truck or heard of Food Truck Tuesdays.
- You apparently pronounce Lafayette wrong.
- You’re completely overwhelmed by the crowds at Easter time in the Broadway Market.
- And you thought a fleece was going to be warm enough for the Buffalo winter.
