9 Things We Can Learn From Serena Williams

She's a fanstastic tennis player that happens to be incredibly wise, too.

9 Things We Can Learn From Serena Williams

When I was nine years old, I got my first tennis racket. It had a picture of Venus & Serena Williams on the case. I remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Since then, Venus and Serena have been some of my biggest role models. After this year’s #SerenaSlam, I was beyond proud of this wonderful woman that I look up to.

Throughout her career, Serena has said some pretty inspirational things and offered up some wonderful advice. Here are nine of my favorite Serena moments and quotes that offer insight about working hard, being your best and most powerful self, and so much more:

Success has more to do with working hard than luck. When asked about being lucky, Serena said, “Luck has nothing to do with it, because I have spent many, many hours, countless hours, on the court working for my one moment in time, not knowing when it would come.” If that's not dedication, I don't know what is.

You’re allowed to make mistakes every once and awhile. In 2009, Serena had somewhat of a meltdown during the 2009 US Open, when she told a line judge, “I swear to God I’ll f**king take that ball and shove it down your f**king throat.” She was fined and given a “slap on the wrist” by the officials. It was probably a very embarrassing and painful experience, but she moved on from it. She didn’t let her mistakes in the past define her—instead, she went on to receive six grand-slam titles.

“I decided I can’t pay a person to rewind me, so I may as well get over it.”

Loving yourself is so important. “I think you have to love yourself before you fall in love,” Serena was quoted saying. “I’m still learning to love myself.”

It’s okay to be afraid, just as long as you don’t let that fear overcome you. “I am lucky that whatever fear I have inside me, my desire to win is always stronger.”

Accepting yourself is difficult… “Since I don’t look like every other girl, it takes a while to be okay with that. To be different. But different is good.”

…but keep your chin up when other people don’t accept you.

“Lol finally getting them shaped! Hahahha #haters I love you!!! Hahah but I still like them all natural! But for now you win lol” –Serena’s caption of an Instagram post of her getting her eyebrows done, in response to people insulting and body-shaming her earlier this month. Not only did she directly address these insults, but she’s making a joke of it, too. You go, girl.

“Swerve” –Serena’s Tweet & Instagram caption when she posted a gorgeous picture of herself wearing a white dress to the Wimbledon Champion’s Dinner, in response to being body shamed. She later posted a bikini selfie on Instagram.

“You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out,” Serena once said. “We’re always told what’s beautiful and what’s not, and that’s not right.”

Because who cares what people think about you, anyway? “You have to believe in yourself when no one else does.”

Being nice is important. “I want to be a giving woman and just a nice person in general.”

Always remember who you are and what you stand for. “Legendary? I don’t know. I’m just Serena.”

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
