Why I will always say "Merry Christmas"

Lights. Presents. Parties. Santa. With all of these things during the Christmas season, it can be hard to remember the true reason why we celebrate, and it is easy to lose the true meaning of Christmas. Amid cards labeled as "holiday" cards, all of the holiday festivals, and greetings of "Happy Holidays," we have slipped into an era where everything must be politically correct. I fully understand that not everyone celebrates Christmas per se, but if I want to say "Merry Christmas" and if I want to make Christmas about the birth of Jesus Christ, then I should not be bashed for it.

Huffington Post Live recently published a video on Go90 App titled "What Is The War On Christmas Anyway?" Click on the picture below to view a clip from this video.

In this video, contributors to the Huffington Post bash Christians who try to make the Christmas season about Jesus Christ and the Christmas story. Amanda Marcotte, a politics writer, stated in the video, "White Christians like to believe that they are under attack, that their religion is under attack, and they use this as a holiday-specific stand-in for an ongoing year-round narrative."

Christians are expected to make sure not to offend anyone else, but as soon as we feel offended, we are "being ridiculous," and I think that is just crazy.

People are not allowed to say the word "Christmas" -- the very word that defines the celebration -- any longer, out of fear of harming someone. I just don't believe that any harm is caused to any individual reading or hearing the word "Christmas."

The Christmas season has always been about the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and everyone has a feeling of joy and peace for at least a month. When I was growing up, I figured that everyone celebrated Christmas— I mean, why wouldn't you? Now it seems as if no one is allowed to celebrate Christmas, at least not publicly.

So this Christmas, I will listen to my favorite Christmas songs about the birth of Jesus, I will set up a Nativity scene, and I will say "Merry Christmas."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
