5 Misconceptions About Women's Colleges

As a junior liberal arts major at an all-women's college, I can say that I've heard all of the run-of-the-mill stereotypes when it comes to students at my type of colleges. From having my university called "hippy dippy" to being told to love men more, the things I hear from people make me want to cry.

1. Everyone is a lesbian. This makes so much sense. Why would strong, independent women go to a women's college unless they were trying to get laid? Who cares about the traditions, confidence boost of being with fellow women leaders, and degree? Pillow fights are all that matters.

2. We are Feminazis. Obviously, since we go to a women's college, we hate men. All men suck. Whenever anything goes wrong in life, blame the patriarchy.

3. We are going to a modern-day finishing school. The thought that women's colleges and finishing schools are synonymous is degrading. We don't sit around learning how to cook the perfect casserole. We learn exactly what co-ed colleges learn, just in a different environment.

4. We don't know how to act around boys. We aren't a band of babbling, bumbling baboons when it comes to boys. (Thanks, Professor McGonagall.)

5. We won't be successful. Let's look at history since that doesn't lie. Madeleine Albright, a Wellesley College alumna, was the first female U.S. Secretary of State. Drew Gilpin Faust, a Bryn Mawr College alumna, was the first female president of Harvard University. Elizabeth Hoisington, a College of Notre Dame of Maryland alumna, was the first female brigadier general in the U.S. Army.

Don't rely on myths and misconceptions. A women's college is home to independent, fearless women.

If I have learned one thing in my lifetime, it is that friends are a privilege. No one is required to give you their company and yet there is some sort of shared connection that keeps you together. And from that friendship, you may even find yourself lucky enough to have a few more friends, thus forming a group. Here are just a few signs that prove your current friend group is the ultimate friend group.

When it comes to television, there’s very few sets of on-screen siblings that a lot of us can relate to. Only those who have grown up with siblings knows what it feels like to fight, prank, and love a sibling. Ross and Monica Geller were definitely overbearing and overshared some things through the series of "Friends," but they captured perfectly what real siblings feel in real life. Some of their antics were funny, some were a little weird but all of them are completely relatable to brothers and sisters everywhere.

1. The Legacy.

Her sister was a member, her mom was a member, all of her aunts were members, and her grandma was a member. She has been waiting her whole life to wear these letters and cried hysterically on bid day. Although she can act entitled at times, you can bet she is one of the most enthusiastic sisters.

Every kid in college and/or high school dreams of summer the moment they walk through the door on the first day back in September. It becomes harder and harder to focus in classes and while doing assignments as the days get closer. The winter has been lagging, the days are short and dark, and no one is quite themselves due to lack of energy and sunlight. Let's face it: life is ten times better in the summertime.
