How Far Have You Fallen, Zayn Malik?

Please, no one listen to his new song, “Back to Sleep.”

"F**k you to sleep, wake you up again, I be so deep in you, beat it up again.
Just let me rock, f**k you back to sleep, girl.
Don't say a word no, girl don't you talk.
Know it's been a long day, it's about to be a long night, so keep your eyes closed 'til I roll through.
So baby when you're feeling like a woman in the sheets.
Somebody splitting your knees, don't worry that's me.
I'm over here putting work in, baby you ain't gotta tell me what you want."

Is anyone else extremely uncomfortable? Because I am.

Zayn Malik used to sing songs with lyrics like "You don't know you're beautiful" and "Oh I will carry you over fire and water for your love." It's one thing to want to branch out from One Direction, Zayn, but you've transformed from every girl's dream to every woman's nightmare. I'm not even going to comment on your co-singers, Usher and Chris Brown because their previous work speaks for itself.

My little sister CeCe was actually the person who pointed my attention to this song, which gives me hope that it hasn't become too popular yet.

Tumblr user Dieharddirectioner1222 had to say about the song, "'F**k You Back to Sleep' is probably the most degrading song I have ever heard. Just listening to three men singing vividly depicting how they are going to violently “sex you up” makes the listener and women as a whole uncomfortable and leaves them with disturbing images of how they could be violated by these men. Just because Zayn Malik, Usher, and Chris Brown are singing this song does not make it okay. This song not only describes a man waking up a woman with sex that not only does she not know is coming but has given no consent to. “Don’t say a word, no (no), don’t you talk” not allowing the woman to reject? Not giving her a chance to object to what is going to be happening to her? Oh and just in case anyone has forgotten Chris Brown has a history of assaulting women, which makes this song even more repulsive. “Gon’ gimme that spare key, oh But if you keep the door unlocked, be ready.” I have frankly no words to describe this lyric. This song is sick and women should be offended and disgusted not flattered or enticed because Zayn Malik is singing it."

I couldn't agree more, Dieharddirectioner1222. In addition to this astute analysis, I'd like to provide my own brief lyric examination.

Obviously, the song is about a man waking up his female partner by beginning to have sex with her while she is sleeping. Even for a couple in a long-term, trusting relationship, having sex while your partner is asleep is sexual assault. Consent cannot possibly be given while your partner is unconscious, even if you feel confident they’ll enjoy it when they wake. It is not sexy or funny to be used for someone else’s sexual pleasure while you lie there unaware. Let’s not also forget how upsetting and triggering this might be to a man or woman who has been raped in their sleep, either by a known partner or not. The lyric "Beat it up again" provides extremely violent imagery which supports this rape scenario.

I feel as if there is a danger that this sort of scene will become accepted as sexy and romantic, just because some very influential, attractive men are writing and singing it. Girls have grown up wanting to marry Zayn Malik, and now he's singing about very graphic, nonconsensual sex. What is a One Direction fan to do? Attention needs to be drawn to all that is wrong with this song so that no one ever believes it is okay. I'm disappointed, Zayn.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
