Why People Who Wear Matching Socks Have Their Sh*t Together

Socks. Everyone wears them; everyone loses them. Especially being at college, it seems as though the washing machines somehow make one of each of your socks disappear right before your eyes. Whether you rock fuzzy socks, mid calves, ankle socks or toe socks, if you can manage to maintain a pair of matching socks, I applaud you. Maintaining a pair of socks is hard work. This requires organization, attention to details and responsibility all of which I struggle with. Your socks are a reflection of who you are as a person. Here I will outline the reasons how socks become an easy indicator of who has their sh*t together.

Shows you pay attention to the smaller things in life.

Attention to detail in life is key. Focusing on the small things can be make or break in certain situations. Making sure you have two socks in the hamper, two socks in the wash, two socks in the dryer and two socks on your feet may seem to be a small and trivial task among the other copious amounts of responsibilities you may have in life, yet to some, it is a job worth keeping up with.

Gives you a sense of completeness

A matching pair of socks can complete an outfit. Not only this, but also one sock that matches another completes the pair of socks itself. Having completeness in life is vital. You must strive for completeness in everything you do. From completeness in finding a partner in life, to completeness or self-fulfillment of goals and aspirations you may have, you must find completeness.

Responsibility.

Keeping two matching socks together takes responsibility. It means that instead of just throwing your dirty socks just anywhere, you stop and think instead that you might want to act responsibly and take both together and throw them in the hamper. Moving into the real world, you are burdened with new responsibilities such as laundry. For as long as you can remember, your mom has been doing your laundry and very diligently keeping matching socks together. I can’t remember ever wearing mismatched socks when I was younger (shout out to Drea). As a real person in the real world though, you have to do your own laundry.

It brings confidence.

In order to progress and flourish in the greater world, you must exude confidence. Confidence is an admirable trait and people naturally follow and look up to people who are confident. There is something about looking down at your feet and seeing two pristine, matching socks and feeling your confidence go from 0-100 real quick. This goes hand and hand with the look good, feel good saying. If your socks match and you look good, you’re naturally going to feel good.

Gives you purpose.

Sometimes you may feel a little lost. When you start to feel like you’re losing yourself or your purpose in life, just glance down. Having two matching socks might just give you that little boost to remind you that you do have purpose. You have realized that you have purpose in finding your one sock a matching friend. Although this seems frivolous, it is a metaphor. Being able to recognize and find purpose in something as small as being purposeful in maintaining matching socks, you will be able to find a greater purpose in life.

Shows that you are happy in your own shoes.

Matching socks make happy feet and a happy person. When your socks match, you are just naturally a happy more satisfied person. Thus, when you place your snazzy feet in your shoes you can realize that you are also happy with the person you are. Being comfortable in your own shoes takes positivity and acceptance. Having a positive outlook on life and accepting of yourself come with the organization and responsibility of matching your socks.

Yes, I know this all seems quite comical but in reality, wearing matching socks is a true metaphor for how a person keeps their sh*t together. Keeping your sh*t together is a difficult thing that I for one struggle with. So for the people out there like me, who battle to keep matching socks together start by knowing which unmatched socks go most together. You have to start somewhere. For example, put your light grey sock with your dark grey sock and keep these together as a pair from then on. This doesn’t mean your sh*t is together, but it certainly is a step in the right direction.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
