Useful Recruitment Week Tips for Freshmen

1. Eat a good breakfast. This seems self-explanatory, but you'd be surprised how many girls forget to eat in the morning because their minds are on other details of the day. You'll feel SO much better if you eat before each day of recruitment gets started. Trust me. Plus, by eating a filling breakfast you'll avoid any unwanted lion-like noises from your stomach when the clock hits noon.

2.Wear comfortable shoes. You'll be standing for hours. Save the heels for the last day of recruitment and wear comfortable shoes! Besides, the chapter rooms are so jam-packed with girls the first few days that no one notices the shoes anyone is wearing. Promise.

3. Keep a compact/powder duo in your pocket. It gets hot in those chapter rooms, and I mean hot. You can't stuff close to 300 girls in a room and expect cool temperatures. In other words, sweat will be coming from places you didn't know could sweat. You'll be so happy you brought some powder along for touch-ups in between parties.

4. Don't panic. Everyone gets nervous. Everyone has a moment or two of panic at some point during recruitment week. Just remember, everything will be okay. Recruitment week is not the most important thing out there, and life will go on whether you get a bid from the club you were hoping for or not. Remember to look at the grand scheme of things and keep an open mind!

5. If rain is anywhere in the forecast, bring an umbrella. I know from experience that an umbrella is the last thing you're thinking about in the mornings, but take an extra 60 seconds out of your morning to check the weather. Is rain anywhere in the forecast that day? If so, bring an umbrella! You have to walk from your dorms to other buildings throughout the day, getting wet on the way isn't exactly ideal. Besides, it's not like you have to walk into each chapter room with your umbrella. You can leave them in the hallway or with your designated Gamma Chi.

6. Don't hesitate to ask your Gamma Chi questions. Your Gamma Chis are there to help you during recruitment week. What is a Gamma Chi, you ask? They are comprised of member from every Panhellenic sorority, and they disassociate from their organizations during recruitment week (in other words, you won't know which Gamma Chi is an AXO, Kappa, Pi Phi, Zeta, etc.) to guide potential new members through the process. They'll guide you from party to party, give you directions if you get lost, give you mints, hold your things, be your clock, and do basically anything else you need. They are there to help you. Don't hesitate to ask them any questions you have during recruitment week, that's what they're there for!

7. Be yourself. As cliche' as this sounds, it couldn't be more true. You want your personality to shine during recruitment week. Not to mention, it gets a tad awkward when girls can tell someone is being fake. Just be yourself and you're golden!

8. Hand sanitizer will be your new best friend. I'm not kidding on this one. Remember that flu outbreak that overtook Baylor two years ago? You can thank recruitment week for that. It's crazy how quickly germs can spread with 700-800 girls crammed into one building all day, everyday for a week. With all the hands you'll be shaking and all the bodies you'll be standing right next to, for the love of God please use that hand sanitizer like it's nobody's business.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
