Things you need to know if you're rushing

Finding Your Home

Baylor is unique. Sorority recruitment is not first semester, but second. What this means is that the sororities hold different events and meetings throughout the first semester so that girls who are planning to rush will have opportunities to learn about each group and get to know the members.

Ladies, here are some things to know, for the fall semester at Baylor, if you are planning to go through sorority recruitment in the spring.

Make sure you have a recommendation letter for every sorority. Every sorority requires that you have at least one "rec" letter in order to give you a bid, so make sure that you take care of this during the fall semester. To find sorority alumnae to write these letters, reach out to your friends’ moms to see if they were in sororities, ask your mom to ask her friends or coworkers or check with your local area Panhellenic alumni group (i.e. the Plano-Richardson group).

Plan to attend the traditions rally the first week of classes. Each year, to celebrate the upcoming football season, an event is held at the stadium the Thursday before the first game with tailgating, games, concerts, a pep rally and fireworks. This year, the traditions rally will be at McLane Stadium on Aug. 28. This is a great time to meet sorority members, get free food and enjoy entertainment.

Each sorority holds sub dinners twice a month. Each sorority has a designated day and time when girls can go and meet members in the SUB. Even though it is called a “sub dinner,” it’s not actually a dinner. Sub dinners are a great way to meet members of every sorority, get to know the personalities of the members and find out more about the sorority and their events.

Attend all-university events put on by sororities. During the first semester, sororities hold all-university events – fun, free events that all Baylor students can go to. Pi Phi Howdy, Kappa Karnival, Theta/Kappa Sigma Fish Fry, and the Zeta-KOT Welcome Back Bash are all examples of all-university events that take place during the fall semester. These events are so much fun and it is a less stressful way to meet sorority members. Gather up your friends and head to these events for a night of free entertainment!

Hang out with girls in sororities. You can go to their intramural games, grab lunch, dinner, froyo or coffee, walk around Cameron Park or study together. By hanging out, one-on-one or in small groups, you will be able to get to know each other and form a real friendship. Also, it is okay to text or Facebook message them first. I I'd known that during my first semester.

Don't go too crazy just because it's your first semester in college. Sororities and fraternities all require members to maintain a minimum GPA. After all, the primary reason you're at Baylor is to get an education and earn a degree, so make sure you're going to class and studying to get good grades. You don't want to earn a bad reputation for yourself at any parties you may attend during the fall semester. Make good choices to be sure you don't jeopardize your chances of getting a bid from the sorority you want.

Don’t stress. Even though recruitment week can be hectic and emotional, it will work out and you will end up where you are supposed to be. Sorority recruitment is about finding a home with a group of girls and forming lasting friendships. Don't worry about which sorority your roommate wants, or which sororities your friends back home are in. Join the sorority where you feel most at home.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
