Trends to Try This New Year

Each and every new year we all some how make a promise to ourselves. These promises involve becoming better people; whether it be through working out, dressing nicer or trying something we have been wanting to try but have been too afraid to jump.

This new year gives us an excuse to be different, to be more, to make something of ourselves.

Last year around this time I figured 2014 would be my year; turning 21, moving into my first house, having a position in the organization. I figured I would be more involved with friends, try harder with family and better myself through education and exercise. This lasted for about a month and I was then reminded that 2014 was going to be like every other year.

I learned a lot though. I realized that people you thought would be there for you until the end will walk out the door without warning when problems arise. I saw that family is important, and even though there will be arguments and aggravation they will be the people not to leave. I taught myself it is ok to be alone; to depend on yourself to be happy and to reach closer to your dreams. No one will hand you the things you want, you will always have to work for the things you want.

This year though will be different. I mean it this time. But instead of creating shallow goals I have came up with some new trends to try this new year.

1. Kindness.

In a dog-eat-dog world a smile could change someone's day. A compliment could save a life. A simple second lost to hold the door for a stranger could make the world a brighter place.

2. Patience.

With everything coming towards us in seconds we have lost the sense of patience. We want our dreams to come true now, we want to find our person now, but sometimes time is what makes these wishes come true. Patience is virtue.

3. Love.

For some reason we've thrown away the idea of love. People remind me daily love is not real, love is silly... it's not worth your time they'll say. Oh, but it is. Love is worth your time. Show compassion and love to everyone you meet this new year, not only will it help spread the love, but it'll help your heart heal.

4. Judging the soul over the body.

This has been the year we've all said we gained a little more weight than we wanted to. Work on that, but work on your insides more. Love people for their personalities, love them for their passions, not the way they dress, not the way they look... befriend people who are truly beautiful.

5. Ambition.

Never quit.

6. Good vibes.

Get rid of the "I can't"s, throw away the "I don't want to"s, stay positive and remember that the darkness isn't a forever thing.

7. Focus.

Focus on the good things, instead of concentrating on the bad happening around you. Focus on your school work. Focus on your future. Focus on the now. Focus on your happiness and focus on bettering your future. This is your year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Being Invisible The Best Super Power

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
