It's more than just a campaign slogan.

The Reality Of 'Just Do It'

JUST DO IT.

This phrase has been heard by our generation countless times, as is most often associated with the Nike brand. These three words, however, hold meaning and truth that many fail to realize. The power of this statement is swept under the rug due to its overuse. It has become mundane.

Recently, Shia LaBeouf took it upon himself to try and relate to people what this phrase actually means. If you’ve never seen the video, it’s about time you did (it’s Shia LaBeouf after all). If you have seen it, you can picture in your head the frustrated Shia as he does his best to tell us all that we need to get up off our butts and go out and do. Yes, we need to do. Neither me nor Shia – and not even Nike – can tell you what it is that you need to do, but you need to do it.

“Just do it” is a mantra. It is an internal motivator to tell us that we need to stop being lazy and meet the potential that each of us has stored within us. Maybe “Just Do It” means that you need to start that Sociology paper that’s due next week. Maybe it means that you need to call your mom and try and fix your relationship. It could even be as simple as going to the gym. I don’t know. “Just Do It” is what you need to figure out.

“Just do it” is a call to action. Once you figure out what you need to do, you should create a plan for action. Make a to-do list or set some practical goals that will help you “just do” whatever it is you need to. Goal setting doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, but the point is that you acknowledge what it is that you must accomplish and take the initiative to do it. Often times it’s easier said than done, but nothing is impossible. Like was mentioned before, what you need to do should be rational and you should take practical steps toward accomplishing it.

“Just do it” is continuous. Completing a task or a long-term goal is an amazing feeling, but you don’t have to stop there. Once you have accomplished what you need to, don't let that fire go out! Use that excitement to fuel another project for yourself. The feeling of pursuing something to completion is rewarding and should ignite a desire inside of you to keep doing it. Come up with something you need to improve, make another to-do list, or do whatever works for you, but whatever you decide JUST DO IT – and do it well.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
