Why Disney's "Descendants" is Pretty Good?

When I heard that Disney Channel was making a movie about the children of classic fairytales characters, I was skeptical. I mean the Disney Channel movies nowadays are meh compared to the days of Hillary Duff, Raven Symone and all the other favorites. But as I watched Descendants, I found myself rocking to the tunes and loving the concept of the movie. Does it live up to the Disney Channel that I grew up loving? No. But, it’s a new Disney and here are a few reasons I would not knock Disney’s Descendants out of a list of my favorite Disney movies.

1) “Rotten to the Core”

Weeks after watching this movie, I cannot seem to get this song out of my head. What can I say? The song is catchy, and the dance moves are fun to watch. I have probably also watched the video more times than I can count. This may be because I have nothing else to do, but I think it is just because the song is awesome. Even though one should never side with the villains, I find myself siding with the “villains” of this movie from the moment that I heard the song.

2) Kenny Ortega

The man behind the movies that we have come to love, particularly the Disney channel trilogy High School Musical. There is a con to having Kenny direct this movie, as the movie has a High School Musical feel to it, but what can I say, it was like reliving my childhood. Kenny did a good job with this movie. The dances were really good, and for a musical, it’s not too shabby. Will I watch a sequel if it came out? Probably

3) A Surprise Ending?

For those of you out there, who have yet to watch the movie, I will try very hard not to spoil the ending for you. The ending is really not that much of a surprise, since we all know that good always prevail over evil, especially in a DCOM, but the way it plays down is the surprise. I mean who would have thought that the fairy godmother to Cinderella would have a daughter, who has a little narcissistic side to her? Certainly, not me.

4) Getting to see all the original Fairy Tales Characters

Beauty and the Beast, Evil Queen, Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, need I say more.

5) Dove Cameron in purple hair

Purple is my favorite color and I have to say, she does wear it better than most people.

I can go on and on as to why this movie is good. But honestly, you will just have to see it for yourself to make a judgment about it. Is it Disney Channel predictable? Yeah. But, that’s what makes it so good. And honestly, haven’t you ever wondered what will happen if your favorite fairytale characters had children? Now you get the answer to your question.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
