The ABC's Of Being In A Sorority

Here's a quick break down.

109
The ABC's Of Being In A Sorority

A: Active

Someone who has completed their new member or pledge period and has been initiated into the sorority. Best part about it, is no more new member meetings!

B: Bid Day

The final day of recruitment when bids are given out. The day that you see your new sisters running towards you and the day that you can say, "yay, recruitment is finally over!"

C: Chapter

The mandatory Mondays meetings that everyone must attend and listen to a bunch of announcements the executive board makes.

D: Date Dashes

The stressful times of finding the perfect costume, the pregame plans and the date for one night. The one time it is okay to be drunk by 5 p.m.

E: Executive Board

The leaders of chapter trying to take your money, your t-shirt sizes and your phone when you are texting are at chapter. But face it, the chapter would be lost with out these lovely ladies!

F: Formal

Basically the prom of college. One of those nights you will look back on your college experience and remember it. Formal is the funnest night of the year and everyone should enjoy themselves to the fullest that night.

G: Greek

There are 57 fraternities and 21 sororities recognized nationally, but we are really only one. One Greek family. We are there for each other no matter the chapter or the organization.

H: House Mom

The mom that lives in the house with the chapter to make sure everything is working properly. She is someone to lean on, someone to talk to and someone to laugh with. She's your college mom. Shout out to my house mom, Carrole.

I: Initiation

Formal admittance into the sorority. The new members participate in a ceremony that marks their formal admittance into the sorority. Each house has their own initiation ceremony and is very secret and sacred to that house.

J: Joining the best chapter

Deciding to go Greek, means you are joining the best organization there is. Who wouldn't want immediate friends, tons of clothes, cooked food, dances and whole lot of love?! Go Greek.

K: Kind-hearted

The most sweetest, kind-hearted women you will meet belong in sororities. These women understand the concept of giving back and loving one another.

L: Little

Everyone has a big and everyone has a little. Bigs and Littles have an inseparable bond that is unique and special to them. Shout out to my little, Alix. love you!

M: Money

Everyone says that joining a sorority you are "paying for your friends" but I personally think that "if i pay for my friends I down pay nearly enough." A sorority gives you so much more than just friends anyways.

N: Nationals

Every chapter is a member of a national organization which sets policies for the entire sorority. Basically the bosses of the house. The people you have to get literally everything and anything approved by.

O: Opportunities

The opportunities and connections you have in a sorority are endless. There are opportunities to grow as a person, grow your leadership qualities and help you networking to help you in the future.

P: Philanthropies

It's simple, community service is what sororities live for. Typically each sorority has a nationally and/or locally recognized non-profit agency that they donate time and money to.

Q: Quota

The maximum number each sorority can pledge during formal recruitment. This number is determined by the Panhellenic council at each school and is based on many different factors.

R: Recruitment

This includes a whole lot of jumping, bouncing, smiling, screaming and girl flirting. You could say that recruitment is a sport.

S: Sisterhood

This is what joining a sorority is all about. It is about getting to know over 100 strangers and turning them into your sisters. "Friends by chance, sisters by choice."

T: Twins

Twin Littles. When a big has two Littles, more the better. Your twin is your person, the person you lean on whenever you need someone by your side.

U: Unconditional Love

Your sisters, regardless of the situation, will give you unconditional love forever. And that is the greatest thing you can ask for in sorority.

V: Very Extraordinary Women

Being involved in a sorority requries a special woman and we are all bring something special to the organization that we are invovled in.

W: Wedding Day

Cliche as it is, you will find your bridesmaids in your chapter. And I know without a doubt I have in my sorority.

X: "X-tra" Love

Being part of such a big community, you get a little X-tra attention from everyone. But who doesn't need a little extra loving every once in a while.

Y: Young Role Models

The Greek community are young role models to many people outside of the chapter and their university. A lot of other student look up and respect the Greek community.

Z: (no) zzzz's = no sleep

"I'll sleep when I am dead" is a motto to live by in a sorority. There is too much to look forward to and enjoy being in a chapter to miss it all because you were sleeping.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
