Zootopia: Life Lessons From A Disney Movie

"Life isn't some cartoon musical where you sing a little song and all of your insipid dreams magically come true."

Since the 1930's, the Walt Disney Company has produced movies about heroes and heroines going after their dreams whether that be falling in love, wishing to transform from a thief to an Arabian prince, or turning fins into feet. Although these fairytales come with a fictional reality, we can only dream to be able to create our own. What would happen, if in 2016, the company released a movie about all of the animals in the world coming together in a world called Zootopia? How could this one cartoon film be filled with life lessons that pertain to contemporary issues in our modern society? Perhaps this is why this is why the company is a billion dollar corporation.

Always Go After What You Want

If you want to be a police officer like Judy Hopps, who cares if you're a bunny from a small carrot farm? Go for it! It doesn't matter if you're the smallest in your class - you have big dreams. Accomplish them.

Never Judge A Book By Its Cover

You may have to carry Fox Repellent, but be open to meeting new people. Don't judge them from what they look like on the outside. Get to know them. At one time, our best friendships started as two strangers getting to know each other.

Just Because Someone Is Bigger Doesn't Mean They're Stronger

Whether you're a prey or a predator, two of our biggest advantages are not on the outside; they are on the inside. Our brains and hearts are our best weapons and are nothing in comparison to the size of a person next to you.

Two Sets of Hands {Paws} Are Better Than One

Although this may be difficult for those who choose to be independent, you may have to ask others for help. You just have to remember that this is okay! With the power of two, you will be unstoppable and you'll probably have some great laughs along the way.

Be Patient

Sometimes people (or animals) don't move as fast as you would like them to. Sometimes you don't get a job right after you graduate college. Everything happens for a reason, you just have to wait for your dreams to come true.

Don't Allow Anyone To Tell You What To Do

This is your life. No one can OR should live it for you. Wear what you want, fight for what you want, and be who you want. Although your parents may express what they believe you should be doing, be respectful of their wishes, but do not become a different person.

Celebrate Diversity

Everyone is different on the inside and outside. People may like to shop at thrift stores instead of Macy's. Some hate rap and love reggae music. Some prefer their coffee black and some may put everything in. We may look different. We have different goals. We may choose to go to college or find a job after high school. Remember, there is no other YOU in the world so celebrate yourself. You are unique and one of a kind, and so is everyone else.

With all of these in mind, we need to salute the Walt Disney Company for creating the world of Zootopia and the lessons that have followed. We should also praise them for offering Shakira a role in the production.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
