Twerking, hair flipping and shirt ripping were the highlights of the night at UCF’s annual Zeta Lip Sync event. On Thursday night, Zeta Tau Alpha’s biggest event of the year rallied over 20 sororities and fraternities, each with unique dance routines to woo a panel of three judges. This year’s event raised over $32,000, compared to $13,000 in 2014. Proceeds from the event were directed to Breast Cancer Education and Awareness, ZTA’s national philanthropy.
The event, co-hosted by Kappa Sigma, drew a large, excited crowd, filling over half of UCF’s CFE Arena. Greek students hollered in support of fellow brothers and sister’s dancing for a cause. For Nicole Slusher of Alpha Epsilon Phi, that’s the best part.
“I definitely love performing. The energy levels are so high, you feel it while you're up on stage,” Slusher said, after performing with her sisters.
While all in good fun and for a cause, the dance battle was scored and winners were named. The women’s overall win was awarded to Alpha Delta Pi, and the men’s overall to Sigma Chi. Other winners included Delta Delta Delta, Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Delta, Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Upsilon and Phi Delta Theta. The most spirited award went to the Rho Gamma performers.
Some of the most memorable routines of the night included throwback songs and entertaining costumes, as performers came dressed in everything from pink ties to knee high socks.
Members of Theta Chi, sporting pink tank tops, performed a tribute to Miley Cyrus, a routine consisting of old “Hannah Montana” songs and a giant wrecking ball. The ladies of Alpha Delta Pi, dressed in “Straight Outta ADPi” tank tops and pink bandanas danced a routine to a variety of songs including “Lipgloss” and “Chain Hang Low.” The men of Zeta Beta Tau resembled something of a scene from “Magic Mike,” as they danced to “Pony” by Ginuwine and tore off their tanks.
In addition to performances by established Greek chapters, the Rho Gammas danced a routine, a first in Lip Sync history. The group performed a variety of songs including “California Girls” by Katy Perry and “Hotel Room Service” by Pitbull.
The event, open to the public and all chapters, brought thousands of Greek students together in support of Zeta Tau Alpha's efforts to think pink. Senior Hannah Sherman, of ZTA, said watching all the Greeks join forces was extremely rewarding.
“My favorite part of lip sync is always seeing all of the chapters come together to raise money for a common goal,” Sherman said. “Every chapter has its own philanthropy, but it's truly so humbling to see everyone raise so much money for such an amazing cause.”
