Just over a year ago, Zayn Malik officially left the biggest pop group in the world.
Last July, he announced his signing to RCA Records, and by the end of January, the masses were introduced to his lead single "PILLOWTALK," with a music video being released soon after.
I couldn't quite get a grasp on the direction Zayn was trying to go in, and I was still semi-baffled at why he would leave such a successful music group. (I know those checks looked good!)
After listening to his debut album, entitled "Mind of Mine," all of my questions were answered.
The album, which was released this past Friday, is a diagram of the inner workings of the pop star's mind, heart, and soul. Musically, it's slightly sporatic; lyrically, it's somber; and vocally, it's rugged.
But that's the point.
Pain takes on many forms, and this 18 track LP covers all shades of it. All of the inconsistencies and imperfections of the album happen to be the best parts. Is the album perfect? No. Could his vocals use some work? Perhaps. But for a debut album, I must say I'm quite impressed.
Below are my standout tracks:
wRoNg (feat. Kehlani)- Kehlani is a nice addition, serving as the only feature on the entire project. Although very similar to The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey's "Prisoner," this album cut is just as, if not more, enjoyable.
tRuTH- The winding guitars and Miguel-esque vocals suit Zayn well on this sleek, mid-tempo jam.
rEaR VIew- The distorted 80s synths serve as the perfect backdrop for this reflective track. Zayn sings "I never doubted myself/but I doubted you/I'm tired of looking at myself/in the rear view."
BoRdErZ- This is my favorite track on the album. It's sensual, brooding, and the production is stellar! It definitely adds this to your homework/relax/rainy day playlists.
SHE DON'T LOVE ME- Zayn shines on this groovy track as he croons over the blurred lines between a one night stand and a forever thing.
Evidently, this album is a success, as it is the No.1 album in the US this following the No. 1 ascension of "PILLOWTALK" last month. It's exciting to see new artists make a statement with their first project, and Zayn has done that and then some. Long gone are the days of One Direction.
Hello world, meet Zayn.
