I thought that the headline picture accurately describes my predicament, because I do not think I could bear to not know who plays what song anymore. This is wrong since anyone might like the song being used in a video but can not find the attribution in the description or in the video (also it is morally wrong since it would be plagiarism). If you are a content creator on YouTube and you do not bother to reference the band and the song, you might as well write in the source as "The Douchebags - Good Luck Finding This Song You Effing Peasant."
One of these days, I just want to find myself on one of these plagiaristic YouTube videos and comment sarcastically "I love it when I can't find out who plays this song and I have to ask anyone in this comment section who isn't going to answer me 'Darude - Sandstorm' because the uploader can't do it himself."
If the uploader cannot provide that information, then the commenters would have to, because I do not think a lot of us have the time or patience to search a million songs on MetroLyrics that have the same lyrics just to find that one song. I mean, would it not undermine your legitimacy as a YouTuber when even the trolls are in the position to provide helpful information?
So let me get this straight, you are willing to spend hours recording and editing your videos, monitoring your comments, and spreading your video on social media, yet do not take a few seconds to cite your music? You probably spent more of that time trying to find that right song from the right band to begin with. Even if Kevin MacLeod's music is free, you still need to cite it.
As a YouTuber, it is already a cardinal sin to not have permission to use copyrighted material according to the Terms of Service. As an English major, it was a cardinal sin for me to not attribute my sources in the Works Cited page in my essays, in terms of where I get my information. Apparently, outside of the academic world and into the world of YouTube, this is a sin that is about as sexy as lust.
Of course, we are all humans bound to forget small details. Even so, you always have the option to edit the description even after the video is uploaded. But for God's sake, can you please attribute the music you use in your video?! Not just for the sake of God, but Zeus, Odin, Amun, Brahma, and all the other gods out there! Not only do you owe it to the YouTube Terms of Service, but also to anyone who takes a liking to the song you use as well as the artist by giving them more publicity.
P.S. Does anyone know who plays this song in this video? Apparently, it is some glam metal band and it goes "Sister, tell the boys I'm comin' home. Tonight-rrrrr-heaven now." See? You have resorted me to using Peter-Griffin-levels of musical inquiry. You can have all the 80's-themed, PS2-quality resolution Battle Royale games as you want, but just please give me my music.
