One of my new favorite Youtubers is a man named Drew Lynch. He is a comedian who makes videos with his service dog, Stella, who is a brown lab. He calls these videos, "Dog Vlogs." Something unique about Drew is that he has a stutter. Drew didn't always have a stutter. He got a stutter after an accident while playing softball. He got hit in the throat with the ball, and it caused damage to his vocal cords. He said in an interview that the person he was before his injury wouldn't hang out with who he is now, and he admits that he used to be a jerk. Although Drew has a stutter, it in no way impedes his ability to make people laugh.
Actually, Drew was on America's Got Talent in 2015. He went on with a stand-up act that was comprised of jokes about his stutter. He did so well that he got Howey's golden buzzer, which pushed him straight through to the live shows. He made it all the way to the finale but ended up losing to a ventriloquist. Watch the video of his first audition.
Here are some the reasons why I like watching Drew and why I think he is great:
1. Drew is authentic.
Drew was upfront about who he was before his stutter, and who he is now. He said once that he tries to turn things into something positive, and I like that too. He tries to see the good in situations. On America's Got Talent, you could see how he truly was happy and enjoyed what he was doing. One of my favorite things he said after his audition to his girlfriend (after they dropped confetti on to him) was, "Is there confetti in my hair? I feel it in my heart." He also has the ability to laugh at himself, which is important, and also funny. His laugh makes others laugh.
2. Drew is funny.
From his stand up to his vlogs, Drew is very clever and funny. Something that makes his videos so funny is his editing skills. He puts words up on the screen to show Stella's "thoughts" and it makes the video lovable and so much funnier. Here is my favorite video.
3. Lastly, Drew exposes some of the problems with society.
Drew makes some videos about people disrespecting his boundaries when it comes to his service dog, and he tells stories about people at the airport and restaurants not respecting that Stella is a working dog. In my favorite video, that I linked directly above, Drew makes the comment that his stutter isn't getting better, the people who had a problem with his stutter and say that it is better are either used to it, or their morals have improved. Don't judge, Drew is just a normal awesome person who happens to have a stutter.
