As an actor, one of the things that we have to endure is auditioning. Most of us have been through the process, so it becomes routine and we accept it. But it gets hard- going in and baring ourselves with the hope that maybe we will get a callback, but the majority of us realize that the likelihood of that is very slim. Still, we prepare our headshots and perfect our resumes because that is what we need to do.
It can be terrifying, walking into a room full of people and not knowing what they will think of you. Tons of thoughts race through your head and you begin to second guess everything you've prepared. Did I pick the right monologue? Is my song overdone? Did I slate properly? Could I have done more? Could I have been better? You go into the room and you give your all. It could be amazing but also you might have cracked on that one note. Either way, it happened.
Then. Comes. The. Waiting.
You pray to the gods that your name is on the callback list. Truthfully, you don't care what part it is for, you just want some sort of validation for your talent. Then they post it. You skim from top to bottom, checking at least twenty times for your name and maybe it's on there. Maybe it isn't. But if it is you scream loudly (at least on the inside). Then you prep all over again. You learn your sides. You get connected to your character. YOU BECOME YOUR CHARACTER. At least now your competition isn't as high, right? You become more confident, right? Wrong. All of the audition fears come back. But you go in and you do your best and hope that what you did was right.
Then. Comes. More. Waiting.
You don't know when the cast list will be posted, but you refresh your email everyday and hope. Cause that's what you can do.
Whatever the outcome, you have grown as an actor. And no matter what the cycle will always start over.
