You are so much more than that.

Pretty: a word that we take pride in. We see it as a compliment. We as women try so very hard to be perceived as pretty, or beautiful, hot, etc. It's a goal for some. Some of us tend to wear more makeup, buy different clothes, everything, just to feel or look pretty.

Over the summer, I’ve been back in my hometown working my summer job at my town’s local frozen yogurt shop.

I meet some cool people working there -- just random people around town, and those just passing through. I observe a lot. People tell me about their days, all kinds of stuff. It’s funny how much you learn just by greeting customers with “Hey, how are y’all today?”

One night when I was working, the cutest little girl (probably around 6 or 7) and her mom stopped by. She filled her cup up with every gummy we have and asked for a hot pink spoon to match her sparkly bow.

They stayed around the store for probably almost an hour just giggling and spending time together. The little girl was telling a story when I heard her ask her mom “well don’t you think I’m pretty, Mommy?” To which she responded, “You’re not only pretty, sweetie, you are so many things in this world that pretty just doesn’t seem to cover it.”

Since the sweet little girl replied, "well that's good, Momma, I like a lot of stuff." I’m not quite sure she understood what her mom meant at this very moment, but her mom instilled a lesson in her daughter on this day and it’s one I hope when she does understand, she never forgets. And in fact, I think it’s a lesson that more of us women need to be reminded of.

So here’s to you, little Miss Sparkly Hot Pink Bow and your awesome mom. Here’s to every woman that’s ever been called pretty, or went out of their way to try and feel that way:

25 things you are other than just pretty:

  1. You are smart.
  2. You are determined.
  3. You are ambitious.
  4. You are brilliant.
  5. You are strong.
  6. You are curious.
  7. You are studious.
  8. You are classy.
  9. You are loving.
  10. You are compassionate.
  11. You are hard working.
  12. You are sincere.
  13. You are unapologetic.
  14. You are kind.
  15. You are loyal.
  16. You are a good friend.
  17. You are a good person.
  18. You have a big heart.
  19. You are incredible.
  20. You are fabulous.
  21. You are fearless.
  22. You are beautiful.
  23. You are creative
  24. You are one of a kind.
  25. You are you.

Being you makes you pretty, it makes you pretty fantastic, pretty brilliant, pretty kind, and everything else in the world.

I think we get so caught up in being pretty in today's society. Looks control us, the way we look and are looked at by others dominates how we feel about ourselves. Instagram likes and whether someone thinks you're attractive enough to swipe right ends up taking a toll on all of us. We start asking ourselves, "am I pretty enough?" or "do I look pretty today?" But we shouldn't ask.

Let’s not limit ourselves to just one word, we are so much more than that. Being pretty is awesome and all, but it's just not enough. It’s too vague to describe how incredible we all are.

So next time you question if you’re pretty enough, or good enough, just smile and remember, “You’re not only pretty sweetie, you are so many things in this world that pretty just doesn’t seem to cover it.”

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
