I've recently come across this thing called the pink tax. I wasn’t really sure what this so-called phenomenon was, so I decided to do a little investigating… aka I searched it on Google. It turns out that the pink tax is a tax put on women’s health and beauty products, some of which have an equivalent male product that cost significantly less. In some cases, these products are actually very similar, if not exactly the same. And yet, women are charged more for them, just because they can be. Men and women’s products are usually separated into different aisles, which makes it more difficult to price check, but then again, who would really think that a women’s razor would be priced differently than a men’s razor, right? Wrong.
According to the 2010 Consumer Reports Magazine, women may pay up to 50 percent more for similar products than men. This pink tax can be found in anything from pain relief pills and toiletries to dry cleaning and clothing. It was even found in health insurance. However, Obama's Affordable Healthcare Act made it illegal for insurance companies to price different rates for similar services based on gender.
It turns out that gender-pricing is only really illegal in California, New York City, and Dade County in Miami, FL. For the rest of the country, gender-bias in pricing products is fair game.
Here are some examples of products that are equal in quality but unequal in price:
Well, I guess they're the same exact product, but I mean, women's skin is softer and more susceptible to cuts and other injury. I'm sure those pink razors are have some skin-protecting agent that makes the price a little higher.
Oh, this one it easy to justify. Women like their soaps and shaving gels to have more suds and, well, more suds equals more money.
The logic behind this one is that men sweat more than women, so in turn, men will end up buying at least two twin packs of deodorant in a single month whereas a twin pack for women will last them three months. Duh.
No, these prices are not justifiable. The bottom line is that these taxes are ridiculous and insensible. Why should there be a tax for simply being a woman?
