What can you find in your Wonderland?

Heart racing, blood boiling, clock ticking, mind blank you stand there panting - you finally cracked. Between the finals, your usual social tensions and that one professor, you just couldn't take it anymore. Your books lay on the ground scattered like shards of glass. Thought you had it all figured out, you planned, studied ahead, were in all the study groups, slept on time... But for some strange reason it all fell apart today. Now the only thing that stands before you is some worn out door in some unfamiliar corner of the college.

Do you go in?

We all feel/felt that finals pressure, the one that keeps you up all night and makes you question why you chose the courses you did. We rush here and there, blow dust off our ancient notes from the beginning of the semester, we try everything and anything to stay afloat on all the pressure and sometimes we crack. Sometimes we cry, scream, shout, just plainly give up, fall sick even because we feel we can't do it. Maybe this happens for something other than finals; family issues, heartbreak, bad friends, a terrible mistake?

Either way we shouldn't be discouraged, because at this point, where we stand empty handed in front of some mysterious door leading "who knows where", we should take a breath and walk right in. Take a little bit of time to take a walk in the sunset, find a place away from you usual walking path in the school day, sit at that place which you thought was a bit oddly placed, look at the ceiling of your library... do something differently. Find a wonderland on the inside in an unfamiliar place. Explore yourself a bit. Introspect. As you think about yourself, observe the new surrounding taking notice of the differences it's uniqueness and I'm sure you'll find the same introspecting too. You see, it's not that you're incapable, it's that you forget just how awesome you are, how many ways you can do the same things, how unique you are, how crazy you are. You're a mad hatter who's been rushed here and there by a white hare, but now you must disappear like the Cheshire and re-appear as curios and courageous as Alice.

Open the door of your mind, walk into your sub-conscious mind and remember the beauty that is you. Let your thoughts lead you through the wonderland inside and emerge on the other side - very much the same and very much different. Take a moment to explore yourself and remember just how capable you are because you are. Dear person, you've made it this far and you can make it even further.

Dear person, take a breath, look around

...go in.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
