Your Winter Break To-Do List

Winter Break is finally here!

Ah, finally! You just finished all of your finals and have earned a long break for finishing the semester. What better way to do that than with a whole month off of school?

Even though you have an entire month of break, sometimes you might run into trouble when you can't figure out what to do with yourself other than sleep and eat. Here's a list of things that you can tackle over your winter break this year.

1. Hang out with your family

Winter break means that you're most likely back at home living with your family. I'm not saying that you have to spend every waking of minute with them, but maybe set time aside to watch a movie together, play a board game or just relax and enjoy each others presence! I'm sure you missed them just as much as they missed you.

2. Create some chaos with your friends

I don't know about you but reuniting with your best friends from back home is one of the greatest feelings ever. Even though it might be too cold outside, there's always something that you and your friends can do to have fun. So go out and have some fun! Just don't break anything.

3. Start a new show

What better time than now to feed into your Netflix/Hulu addiction and start a new show? You have plenty of time to find something good or you can even settle for rewatching all of your favorite shows from the very beginning. All break to binge watch Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black? Hell yes!

4. Read a book

Reading a book may seem like a chore and a stupid option if you're not into reading, but with a month off of school, you should feed your brain. There are plenty of good books out there, but if you really can't stomach the idea of sitting down and staring at some pages, you can always try a nice audio book!

5. Play with your pets

There's nothing that I love more than animals. If you have a pet back at home or just in general, you can spend some extra time giving your pet some TLC and maybe teaching them so new tricks! Now if you don't have a pet, then you can just skip this step or go visit your local animal shelter. Give the animals some love!

6. Eat

Now, you can either use this break to get your act together and eat some much needed fruits and veggies, OR you can continue your college diet and eat anything and everything. Oh! Don't forget about the egg nog and the christmas cookies!

7. Sleep

Did you lose hours of sleep from aimlessly studying for finals week? Did you sacrifice sleep so you could go out to the bars and then hit up after hours and late night Taco Bell? If so, then you might find yourself in desperate need of beauty rest. Now is the perfect time! You can take multiple naps a day and not have to feel bad about it because you're on break.

8. Take up a new hobby

Why not find yourself a new hobby? You can learn a new instrument, learn how to cook, become skilled in a sport or form of exercise, start a YouTube channel, etc. The opportunities are endless!

9. Travel

Hate the idea of staying in your hometown for break? Why not go somewhere for vacation? You can visit somewhere warm and tropical, or somewhere cold and snowy. Take some time to explore! You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

10. Nothing

If none of these options sound good to you, why not spend your winter break doing absolutely nothing? Some find great joy in doing nothing, including myself.

Have a great and safe winter break!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
