This past week was the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, just in case you didn't know. I've waited 18 years to be able to participate in politics to have the ability for my voice to be heard but this is possibly the worst election ever. Millennials now rival Baby-Boomers as the largest voting demographic. Millennials make up 31% of the voting population in this year's election. Having all of these young voters is a great thing, however, that means there are definitely a lot of opinions floating around whether it be online, in classrooms, in the workplace, and even in homes all across America.
Personally, I'm exhausted of hearing yelling from both sides and I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. The immaturity that's been displayed from both parties during this race is unheard of, especially from a group of people that could potentially be the leaders of our country. I'm tired of the assumptions that come with saying: "Let's Make America Great Again!" or "I'm with Her." "Hillary for Prison!" "Build the Wall!"
As a young adult, whoever wins this 2016 election has the power to drastically change our nation for good or for bad. Millennials have grown up in a society of constant change and security. We don't know what it is to have peace in our nation or even globally. As young Americans, we are accustomed to war and unrest among the people.
Not only is this election as a whole tiring but so is defending my views against others. While I don't fully agree with either candidate I refuse to respond with disrespect and hateful rhetoric. In being passive in my response I spare myself time and energy that could otherwise be used in finding a solution rather than focusing on the problem.
The thing that matters most about this coming election is that we collectively come together as a nation and exercise our civil liberties and our right to vote. Contrary to whom the mainstream media tells you to vote for or perhaps what your friend Sally on Facebook said about Hillary or Trump your vote is your own. Rather than hashing it out with someone else decide for yourself which candidate represents your beliefs best.
