Your Statement Was Wrong

Sorry Colin, I don't agree

Your Statement Was Wrong
Hannah Tamul

I am not the person to watch many politics, or say much about that is going on in the news. In recent news it has been going around about a football star not respectful enough to stand up for the National Anthem. There's something that we can all learn from this. Not only why Colin Kaepernick was so wrong, but why a statement can be taken very wrong.

Let's first take a look at who he is as a person. He makes about 19 million a year for barely playing football for the San Francisco 49ers. This is not the first time he has done something to go against what others want. He is a religious person and has many bible verses tattooed on his arms. Yet he has been fined for using vulgar language. So you tell me does this look like a person of color truly understands what is going on in our world?

You have the right in this country to standing up for what you to believe. I have the right in this country to not agree with it. I don't agree with what you did at all. This country deserves respect. The reason I stand up during up the National Anthem is for the safety and security that military personnel has provided for me.I stand up because I would never want to have to go through what they have. I stand up because I am able to walk out my door safely unlike the supposed people you are trying to stand up for. I stand up because the great education this country tries to provide for us. I stand up because it shows me how far this country has come.

This is not about violence. This not about how people of color are being oppressed. You need to get your priorities straight. You sitting on your a@# when other people are trying to show respect for something has NOTHING to do with violence. You are making people more angry about the situation. The National Anthem is played for peace. It is played for the people that are no longer with us because they protected YOU.

It is time to get your stuff together. Instead of sitting down stand up. Go into those neighborhoods, get involved, and make a difference. The only thing you need to do to make a difference is donate your time to something good. Do you really want to go out in history as the guy who sat during the National Anthem. The guy who lost his career over a statement, a wrong statement. The guy who has videos out there of people burning his jersey or smack talking him. I know that I am not perfect or the exact image of how someone should act in this world. Colin, you need to know that it is the wrong image that you are trying to send.

Sincerly,

The one from the outside

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
