Your Problems Are, Literally, Insignificant

And the world keeps spinning.

Your Problems Are, Literally, Insignificant

You wake up in the morning tired and not prepared to leave your bed. You finally muster up the energy and motivation to get up and get dressed and the second you take your first step, BOOM, you stub your toe on the corner of your desk. Day ruined. You’re now cranky, irritable and quite frankly, pissed off. You think the world is out to get you and that nothing can go right from here. Well, you’re wrong. The world doesn't give two craps about you and your well manicured stubbed toe. Honestly, no one does but you, because it hurts really damn bad. And it’s okay to feel that pain and curse and crawl back into bed and shed a few tears, but it’s all up to you to move on and complete the rest of your day with an open mind and a positive outlook.

It’s almost reassuring to know that if we fail that one test, or take that wrong turn, that the world is going to keep spinning and life will go on. There are billions of people who don't care about you, likewise, there are billions of people that you don't care about. All of our day-to-day problems are temporary, dwelling on them only prolongs them and drags the suffering out. Sometimes moving on is easier said than done but in the end, those little problems aren't going to matter. It’ll be you and hopefully the people you love, and once again, the world will keep spinning.

I’m not writing this to explain how your problems don't matter and how you should get over yourself, not at all actually. I think issues in our individuals lives are very raw and very real and it just hurts like hell sometimes and that’s completely okay, because feelings demand to be felt. But what I’m trying to say is that you will be okay. You will get through this little rut and find happiness and love again. The stars will still shine, the sun will still rise, and life will go on.

If you need proof just go look at the stars at night, and I mean really look at the stars. Look past the brightest ones, and you’ll see millions, even billions of little dimmer stars beyond the bright ones. It will make you feel so little and remind you that we are all so small in the grand scheme of things, quite literally. There’s always something bigger than us, whether it be something physical or something spiritual. Similarly, there are always things we don't understand, like our problems or how the universe was made so beautifully or why bad things happen to good people. To sum it up: life throws you around sometimes, but if you take a deep breath and remember how small you are, you’ll be reminded that everything will be okay and that the world keeps spinning.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
