I am quite the movie buff, and I find that I watch more movies than ever during the summertime. Here are a few of my favorite, both new and old.
P.S. I literally love every genre of movie, so this list is all over the place.
1. "Paper Towns"
I seriously love John Green. He is such a talented author, and his books are so uniquely done. "The Fault in Our Stars" movie (and book) were great, and the "Paper Towns" book was amazing, so I had high expectations for the movie adaptation of it. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. The plot revolves around Q, an intelligent, shy, teenage boy infatuated with his mysterious neighbor Margo. After taking him on a whirlwind midnight adventure trip around the city–she randomly disappears. Q then realizes she left him clues to where she went off to. The story goes from there. Not only is this movie hilarious, but it is also an inspiration for all people to not be afraid to venture out and do something out of their comfort zone. I especially love this story because it is not your typical RomCom. The ending is different than what you would expect.
2. "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"
OKAY. I just saw this movie for the first time, and it is an absolute heart breaker. I had no idea it was going to end the way it did. It is about a little boy named Bruno, who, during World War II, leave Berlin with his family to take up residence near the concentration camp where his father has just become commandant. The story unfolds from there. GRAB THE TISSUES.
3. "Pulp Fiction"
My love for Quentin Tarantino films is too real. Some of my favorites are "Kill Bill," "Django Unchained," and "Inglorious Bastards." I am pretty late to the party on this one, but I just recently watched Pulp Fiction and fell in love. Yes, it is a bit raunchy and gory, but nonetheless, it is still a superb movie. It is essentially a crime movie, but the way the course of events play out is very different. The whole story is kind of told out of order. I LOVE when movie creators branch out and create content that is unlike anyone else. Quentin Tarantino is the king of doing that.
4. "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"
WOWOW. This film is just great. Rooney Mara is such a bad-ass. I love a bad-ass heroine who is smart as a whip, but also tough as nails. The storyline is really intriguing. It basically centers around Daniel Craig’s character, Mikael, taking on the task of solving a 40 year old, unsolved murder. He enlists the help of Rooney’s character, Lisbeth. (Because even though she is very troubled and complicated, she is one of the best investigators around) YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS MOVIE. I was sad to hear that the sequel for this movie had been put on the back-burner after some complications with the studio. I REAAALLLYY want to see this story continue. Who knows? Maybe one day it will. Or I guess I will have to read the second and third books.
5. "Interstellar"
Two words to describe this movie=MIND-BLOWING.
I went into this movie not having a clue what it was about. Man, was I completely blown out of the water. First things first, the music in this film is just phenomenal. It is so great that I listen to it in my free-time. The EPIC score is by Hans Zimmer, who also did the music for the Dark Knight trilogy. The sound is haunting, but inspiring and beautiful at the same time. The movie stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain. The movie takes place in Earth's future. Life on Earth is becoming uninhabitable. A brilliant NASA physicist is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home. But first, he enlists the help of a former NASA pilot (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers to explore the Galaxy in search of the proper home for all of Earth’s inhabitants. WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW. AND PAY CLOSE ATTENTION. There are a lot of details that go into the epic conclusion.
6. "Signs"
This is one of those movies that I watched a lot throughout my childhood, but I hadn’t seen it in a long while. My little sister popped it in the DVD player last night, and I watched it from beginning to end. WOW. I had forgotten how good it was. This film centers around a former priest, (Mel Gibson) his brother, (Joaquin Phoenix) and his two kids. They live on a farm in rural America. And lets just say they encounter some terrestrial beings. AKA ALIENS. Yeah, it sounds cheesy, but it is honestly so well done.
7. "About Time"
"About Time" is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. It is by the same director who did "Love Actually" and "Notting Hill." You know it has to be good. It centers around the tall and awkward character, Tim, played brilliantly by Domhnall Gleeson. (AKA the guy who plays Bill Weasley in "Harry Potter.") Tim is no ordinary man. He finds out from his father (Bill Nighy) that he has a rare gift that has been in the family for a long time...the ability to time travel. Tim begins his journey by changing his past to improve his future. This time travel ability of course helps him to get a love interest, played by Rachel McAdams. Yet he is still awkward, and time travel can get complicated, so things do not go as planned. But what I really love about this movie is the close relationship Tim has with his father. Their relationship reminds me of my close relationship with my father. This is the perfect RomCom to watch on a Friday night with popcorn and jellybeans.
8. "Harry Potter"
One cannot possibly make a Summer movie playlist without including "Harry Potter." The HP Series is always my go to on lazy, Summer days. Something about HP is so comforting. You probably already know this, but the Harry Potter Series centers around a young wizard and his adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. These movies never get old.
9. "Sweet Home Alabama"
This one is an absolute classic! “Why would you wanna marry me for anyhow?” “So I can kiss you anytime I want.” Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) is a big time fashion designer, engaged to the mayor of New York City’s son. She has tried to put her redneck past behind her. That's including Jake, the country husband she married in high school, to whom she is still married. (And he refuses to divorce her.) She is determined to end their relationship, so she sneaks back home to Alabama to confront her past. THIS MOVIE IS SO GREAT. Another perfect RomCom.
10. "Mamma Mia!"
I LOVE MUSICALS. Mamma Mia is definitely one of my favorites. It is so upbeat and fun. Every time I watch it, I find myself singing and dancing around my house like a crazy person. “DANCING QUEEN YOUNG AND SWEET ONLY SEVENTEEN.” The movie is set around ABBA songs. Donna (Meryl Streep), a hotel owner in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter's wedding. Her daughter, Sophie, secretly invites three men from her mother's past, in hopes of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day. It is a bit cheesy, but overall such a fun movie.
11. "Big Hero 6"
This is my favorite Disney movie! GAH THIS MOVIE IS SO GREAT AND SO UNDER-RATED. A brilliant, young robot maker named Hiro lives in the city of San Fransokyo. When a devastating turn of events throws Hiro into the middle of danger, he transforms Baymax, a robot whose sole purpose is to take care of people, and his other friends into a band of high-tech heroes. If you haven’t seen this film, you are missing out. Not only is this movie very well done, but it is also the funniest Disney movie ever made.
