As a young girl, my meme always spoiled me and went the extra mile for me.

As I've grown older, I have realized how much of a true friend my grandmother actually is. I have had friends in the past who have come and gone, but my meme is one who has stuck around (no matter how many tattoos/piercings I acquire over time). She's a forever friend I can truly count on, rain or shine. Here are a few ideals I've noticed in life when your grandmother is actually your best friend.

1. You always make time to hang out with her - even when you absolutely have no time to spare

My college experience so far has been incredible, but very much so busy and overwhelming; but no matter what is going on in my world, I will drop whatever is going on to spend time with my meme. Whether it's a lunch date or just walking around Walmart while she shops, I always clear out a day or two to spend time with her.

2. You trust/value her opinion on people who you date more than anyone else's.

All of my friends usually give me their honest opinions on boys before I go on a first date or even give them a second thought. You can ask any of my friends, though- sometimes I take the opinion to heart and other times I don't. But one thing is for sure, if my meme thinks that date is a bad idea, you can bet your bottom dollar I'm staying home on Friday night.

3. You are determined to teach her how to use an iPhone/Instagram/Facebook so you two can keep in touch.

I love gifs, but I really love them more when I receive them from my meme. Watching her learn how to Facetime so we can talk while I'm in a different country with only WiFi access and teaching her how to double-tap to like my posts has been an adventure. But one thing is for sure - no matter how far away from home I am, i'm confident we'll stay connected thanks to technology and social media.

4. She listens to all your stories and rants (even though she may not know half of the people you’re mentioning).

I tend to talk really fast, so when my meme stay interested in my stories, even though she most likely cannot understand what I'm saying, that is a big deal. She always listens intently and tries to keep up with what's going on.

5. You can eat how much of whatever you want to without her judging you (but mainly because she cooked it for you).

Whether it's advice about a boy, a few dollars for gas, or a last-minute meal because I'm hungry, I can always count on my sweet Meme to be there for me. She loves me - unconditionally, and without judgment - and every day I am thankful that God gave me a best friend and confidant in my grandmother.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
