The past few days I have been having more and more conversations with both friends and family about my major (Psychology) and why I decided on it.
Then it got me thinking, which allowed for me to come up with the reasons why I do enjoy psychology.
Growing up I had always enjoyed helping people and I was always that friend who would giving people advice about what they should/should not do. Originally, I was going to become a computer engineer because I enjoyed working with electronics and was amazed with how they work. But due to my poor math skills, I knew I needed to choose another path. I was very set on computer engineering until my second semester as a junior in high school. It was there that I learned more about people's thoughts due to a research paper where I wrote about how our mind drives us to do different things. My paper was on how serial killers became serial killers and how their past events in life shaped them into committing their murders.
It was then, that I realized that I wanted to help those who did not get help before they spiraled down their horrible paths.
I believe that people are shaped by not only their genetics, but their environments which they live in. I have always described the way I see the world as a tesseract or a cube within a cube. I don't just look at a person based on how they dress. I have a series of questions in my head as to why they are the way that they are; such as, why are they wearing those clothes? Do they like that color they're wearing? Why do the look upset? I wonder what they did this morning? Did they eat breakfast? Were they running late for their first class? This is often why I overthink, because my brain is always thinking of what has happened before or what will happen after.
Therefore I want people who are suffering from events in their lives to be able to talk them out in order to help relieve some of their burdens. If we don't eventually let out things that stress us out, they can become bottled and suppressed and who knows what come become of these emotions. Receiving therapy could be the difference between another killer to another gardener.
Everyone deserves to let out what burdens them in order to help not only others around them, but themselves as well. Becoming a psychologists allows me to help people who need help. By learning more about others I also learn more about myself and can open up my brain to the many new perspectives that the world has to offer.
