Your first roommate

College throws a lot at you. Most of us haven't had to room with anyone until we get to our freshman year of college. It is very exciting and new, but there are a few things you should know.

It is not just your living space now.

You may be completely comfortable with your dirty underwear, smelly socks and midnight snack sitting on the floor until you get to it two days later, however your roommate most likely will not. Now, they will probably be understanding but just be courteous.

Don't touch the things that aren't yours.

Now, both of your razors, both of your tooth brushes, both of everything, including drum sets, will be in the same space. If you have something you simply cannot share, let your roommate know and respect their boundaries also.

Remember to share.

Ask permission. You will both benefit, and you can lean on each other. Life is tough alone!

Now that you've seen the bad, here is the good.

You will always have someone to eat with you.

Neither of you have a group of people yet. Don't be afraid to invite them to eat with you. Your roommate will probably always be down for some buffet-style campus food that is just OK.

You probably won't have a mean girls "You can't sit with us!" moment.

Your housing has a built in study buddy!

Most dorms pair their roommates with people within similar majors. Even if you don't have classes together, you or your roommate can provide each other with moral, emotional, and sometimes academic support.

You will have this moment...

Either because of the forced proximity or you just are compatible, you will most likely become best friends with your roommate. Living with someone makes you either love or hate them.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
