Dear Fans,
I get it, I really do. I am a huge fan of so many bands and recording artists. I’ve cried, screamed, and completely obsessed over their whole lives at times. They just get you, more than anyone else.
In light of the drop of Beyonce’s new (amazing) visual album "Lemonade," her fans (The Beyhive) have come out in response to her song “Sorry." In this song, Queen B makes many references to her often questioned relationship with her husband and rapper, Jay-Z. The most noted was “he only want me when I’m not there/He better call Becky with the good hair.”
Many thought that line was in reference to fashion designer Rachel Roy because of an Instagram she posted, saying, “Good hair don’t care… #nodramaqueens.”
To put it quite frankly, her fans lost their sh*t.
Many comments soon appeared on her Instagram, calling her various names, many of the comments just saying “Becky?” It got so bad that Roy made her Instagram private, and was harassed on Twitter for hours. It got to the point that even Roy's own daughter was being attacked.
I love Bey and Jay as much as the next millennial, because they are actually goals, but can we all (read: the Beyhive) take a step back for a minute? Beyonce came for someone, and yes, cheating is awful and totally not cool with a lot of people. Did Beyonce actually say the woman in question was Rachel Roy? Did Roy purposely bring the attention on herself with the Instagram? Unfortunately, we cannot read minds and we cannot see what goes on behind closed doors. What fan groups need to realize is, yes, it is important to support your faves during their times they need it, but even if the Queen did come out and say Roy was Becky, there is no need attack.
The Beyhive is notorious for doing this, and other celebrity's fan groups are as well. Directioners, Little Monsters, Belibers, Rihanna Navy… we all aren’t innocent. But just because your celeb crush is dating someone new or outwardly hates someone, that does not mean it’s okay to attack them full out on social media. For one, imagine if you were that person, and two, some of the threats people make toward these “hated” celebrities are outright mean and terrible. Threatening to kill Justin’s new girlfriend is not only a bad look on you, it’s going to look really bad when your employer sees it 10 years down the road. In a world full of negativity, why do we always have to put each other down? Instead of trying to find out who Becky is, why don’t we all try celebrating the musical greatness that is Beyonce’s new album? Let Beyonce deal with Becky and you enjoy her music, it’s as simple as that.
So just think before you post, love your celeb, and trust me, Beyonce knows you have her back.
Xoxoxo,
Level-headednness
