Your Breakup With Dak: A Playlist

It’ll ease the pain—or at least drown out the sounds of your sobs.

Going through the post-Dak season at Mississippi State University has been rough. Being without Dak is a lot like going through a breakup. You try and pretend like you don’t remember him, or that your life is better without him. You try to be positive about what’s ahead; even if the present is very bleak (very). However, underneath it all, you’re still that sad 15-year-old girl who Taylor Swift sings about—lost without your “one true love.” So, just like any high schooler with angst, I’ve created a playlist for you to listen to along with suggestions on how to change the lyrics to fit your situation whilst belting them out in the car or shower. It’ll ease the pain—or at least drown out the sounds of your sobs.

1. “Someone Like You” –Adele

-Notable lyric: “You know how time flies, only yesterday was the time of our lives”

-Change to: “You know how time flies, only (2014) was the time of our lives”

2. “Breakeven” –The Script

-Notable lyric: “They say bad things happen for a reason”

-Change to: “They say (losing to South Alabama) happens for a reason

3. “Need You Now” –Lady Antebellum

-Notable Lyric: “It’s a quarter after one, I’m all alone and I need you now”

-Change to: “It’s (the fourth) quarter, I’m all alone and I need you now”

4. “Total Eclipse of the Heart” –Bonnie Tyler

-Notable Lyric: “Once upon a time I was falling in love, now I’m only falling apart”

-Change to: “Once upon a time (we were number one), now (we’re not even ranked)”

5. “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” –Bee Gees

-Notable Lyric: “How can you mend this broken man? How can a loser ever win?”

-Change to: “How can you mend this broken (team)? How can (we) ever win?”

6. “Hello” –Adele (Do you really think it’s a breakup playlist without at least two Adele songs?)

-Notable Lyric: “Hello, can you hear me? I’m in California dreaming about who we used to be”

-Change to: “Hello, can you hear me? I’m in (Davis Wade) dreaming about who we used to be”

7. “Nothing Compares 2 U” –Sinead O’Connor

-Notable Lyric: “It’s been seven hours and 15 days, since you took your love away”

-Change to: “It’s been seven hours and (154 days), since you took your love away”

8. “The One That Got Away” –Katy Perry

-Notable Lyric: “In another life, I would be your girl, we’d keep all our promises, be us against the world”

-Change to: “In another life, (you) would be our (guy), we’d (keep the ball), be us against (the SEC)”

9. “Send My Love to Your New Lover” –Adele

-Notable Lyric: “send my love to your new lover”

-Change to: “send my love to (The Cowboys)”

10. “The Heart Wants What It Wants” –Selena Gomez

-Notable Lyric: “The bed’s getting cold and you’re not here, the future that we hold is so unclear”

-Change to: “(Things are) getting (bad) and you’re not here, the (record) that we hold is so (severe)”

Whether it’s Spotify, Apple Music, or CDs (do they even make those anymore?); however you choose to listen, I’ll be thinking of you. We can get through this. Together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
