Why We Still Need Feminism

It is not just the news we see that prove that we still need feminism.

In 1919, women gained the write to vote. In 1963, the Equal Pay Act made it a law for men and women to get paid the same when performing the same scope of work. In 1973, Roe v Wade established that it is a woman's right to decide whether or not she wants an abortion. It's 2016, and a woman is still not treated equally as her counterpart. While the movement progressed immensely, there is still room to progress even more.

We still need feminism because apparently a female can be wearing jeans and polo (oh so revealing!), and still be catcalled by random strangers. And while some find catcalling flattering, it is actually a form of street harassment.

We still need feminism because wearing a knee brace will lead to comments such as "baby can I rub your knee? I got them magic hands!" thrown at you. And trying to avoid any further comments, she quickly turned and walk the other way as fast as her post surgical leg would allow her to. A knee brace! A full leg length medical device used to help support walking in crowded and non flat areas turned into a gadget that she never wanted to use in public even during her bad leg days.

We still feminism because some people in her major think it is funny to say that the only reason she landed an internship is because she is an Asian female in a white male dominated industry. In fact, she has been told that friends use this situation to comfort their friends when they did not receive an offer. Because at this point in her life, her killer extra-curricular, Dean's list qualifying GPA, and stellar interviewing skills did not matter...just her race and gender.

We still need feminism because a random man thinks it is acceptable to insult the country where she was born, but flirt with and try to flatter her seconds after. A significantly older man had the audacity to state "There are too many people in the Philippines, they just need to learn how to close their legs," but moments later said, "You are extremely beautiful, do you come here often?"

We still need feminism because when she was heavily considering joining the United States Navy, she was told by several people that she should not. Why? Because she is a girl.

We still need feminism because I should not have to avoid wearing my brace when necessary. We still need feminism because I should not be worried that I will run into the same man that made me feel uncomfortable in public. We still need feminism because we females should be acknowledged by our hard work and achievement. We still need feminism because it is not just the events we learn in the history books and current events in the news are not the only things that prove that we still need feminism; it is the little encounters like these.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
