Do you ever wish that you could crawl into a hole? Somewhere far away, in the dark and unoccupied by anyone else. It's never the most appealing idea, but sometimes it is what you need to readjust your thoughts. It's healthy to gain a new perspective on life.
When you have hit rock bottom, there is no way to go but up. You look in the mirror and dislike what you see, but sometimes you need to love yourself, or at least start to like yourself in order to climb up and out.
The rocks callus your hands as you climb up off the damp, cold floor. Your legs feel stiff as you straighten them to stand. It's been so long since you have moved from the fetal position or opened your eyes to even look at the sun. Darkness has been around you for so long. It swallowed you up into a deep, black abyss. The air thin and heavy with moisture. Life doesn't grow at rock bottom; but, you can.
Your arms ache as you swing them from side to side around your body. Everything is numb. That tingly feeling you get when a body part falls asleep simply stops. Your nerves grow accustomed to the feeling and your body stops crying out in pain. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, they continue to search for the light.
Climbing up over rocks, bruising your shins and slipping as you go. When you stop to take a breath and look down below, it's startling to realize how far you have come. And, how fast. The rocks dig deep into your hands. Branches scrape across your cheek as you climb. The higher you get, the better the air feels as you draw deep breaths into your lungs.
Up, up, up you go.
The sun shines and green grass grows all around the opening of the hole that you just dug yourself out of. The birds chirp with opportunity in the air. As you lay there, with your face warming in the sun, a smile dances across your lips.
You made it.
Your perspective of life has changed. The small things that once bothered you no longer hang heavily on your shoulders. You're free to start over. You're free to live your life to the fullest. The memories of the darkness will stay with you a while, but eventually it will help build you into someone who is stronger than ever.
