When Netflix suggested “Jane the Virgin” as my next show to watch, I was skeptical. It was some show I’d never heard of from the CW, and it was about a twenty-something year old virgin. Not very appealing. But, I decided to go out on a limb, and instead of starting “Friends” for the millionth time, I chose “Jane the Virgin.” And I was immediately obsessed.
The show is about 23 year-old Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) who has vowed to remain a virgin until marriage being accidentally artificially inseminated at a routine doctor’s visit. Jane then has to tell her fiancé, Michael, and finds out that the father of her baby is Rafael, the owner of the hotel she waitresses at (and her former crush). And it really only gets funnier from there.
But what stuck out to me was the star of the show, Gina Rodriguez. Not only is she an amazing actress who kills it at comedy, she’s also an activist for diversity in Hollywood. In light of the #OscarsSoWhite, she began her own Movement Mondays hashtag. Although her original goal was, as she writes on Instagram, “To celebrate Latino Talent and unite the Latino community under one cause,” Rodriguez takes to Instagram every Monday to celebrate actors and artists of all ethnicities. She began a positive conversation about diversity by taking the time to bring attention to people of color already in the industry.
At the 2015 Golden Globes, Rodriguez took home the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. It was The CW’s first award, and she beat out seasoned actresses like Taylor Schilling and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Her acceptance speech alone was enough to make me completely obsessed with her. She wrapped up her speech with an amazing shout out to her dad: “My father used to tell me to say every morning, ‘Today is going to be a great day. I can and I will.’ Well, Dad, today is a great day. I can and I did.” I’d be lying if I said this doesn’t get me emotional and make me think I can do anything.
I think what’s so captivating about her is that she’s all about empowerment. She’s helping the next generation of kids to believe in themselves and their talents, regardless of whether or not they see themselves on screen now. I think she's everything that a role model should be: funny, honest, humble. So just check her out on Twitter, Instagram, or even Snapchat some time and see why Gina Rodriguez is someone you oughta know.
While I’m impatiently waiting for it to be added to Netflix, season two of “Jane the Virgin” airs Mondays at nine on The CW.
