You Never Truly Get A Break

When school is more than classes and grades to you.

You Never Truly Get A Break

Everyone says that college is the easiest part of life. We still get weekends and breaks throughout the school year, along with the long summer break between spring and fall semesters. But in reality, if you're a college student with long-term dreams and goals that reach for the stars, then there truly are no breaks for you.

You might not be sitting in class at the moment, but you're studying. You're reading. You're researching. You're applying for scholarships or intern opportunities or jobs that pertain to your area of study. Your career goals begin now. You do whatever you can to get as far as possible in your field before you even get that degree in your hand.

It's extremely frustrated to be told that you're lazy when you get tired. You work day in and day out towards your educational dreams, and that's a pretty exhausting process. You stay up late studying for tests. You wake up early to finish projects or type papers. You never feel like what you're doing is enough, when in reality, you're already ahead of the game.

You're never satisfied. You continue to push yourself despite already doing exceptionally well. You get disgusted looks from classmates when you're upset about that B you got on a difficult test. But to you, a B isn't good enough. You hold yourself to an extremely high standard and when that standard is not met, you get a sense of disappointment in yourself. You live in a constant state of anxiety and stress because you never stop going. You never stop growing. You never stop trying to be a better you.

On weekends, you study. Over holiday breaks, you're reading and trying to catch up before you get back to school and feel behind again. Over summer break, you take courses, you find internships, you work. You never stop and I applaud your devotion to your future. You have found the passion that sparks your soul and that is truly a wonderful thing.

Don't stop following your dreams. The world needs more people like you. More people to set material aside and get their mind on the track of being the best in their field. You were put on this planet for a purpose and don't stop until you find that purpose. Keep your eyes on the prize. The years you get in college to build your career upon are the most important ones of your life. For you, there are no breaks.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
