Cross country runners are really one-of-a-kind people. We volunteer to run way too many miles and we enjoy it. We definitely have our quirks, but who doesn't? Here are some signs that might tell you that you are indeed a cross country runner:
1. You love to run
Though it might sometimes be a love hate relationship with running, the love is definitely there. Non-runners are often super confused when they hear that it actually is possible to enjoy running, because it is hated my most people. Maybe we're crazy because we love to run, but, I'm okay with that.
2. The limit of the amount of pasta you can eat does not exist
Is there a better post-run meal than a huge plate of pasta? I think not. I can down pasta like there's no tomorrow. Pre-race carb-loading is my favorite excuse to eat an embarrassing amount of penne covered with marinara sauce.
3. You're used to the fact that your sport never gets any respect
Cross country is one of the hardest sports out there, but for some reason most people just don't really care about it. Cross country races can get super intense, which is why cross country is listed as a partial contact sport, but it is still impossible to get people to come watch you race.
4. Your Garmin watch is your favorite accessory
And I'm sure you have the tan line to prove it.
5. The fact that running 5Ks has become so trendy kind of annoys you-- because you've been running them long before they were cool
With runs like the color run and annual turkey trots, everyone has jumped on the 5k bandwagon. At least we don't just do it for the gram.
6. Your feet are not the same color as your legs
Training for cross country gives you a mean sock tan, but at least it shows your athleticism.
7. You're not afraid to get aggressive or dirty during a race
Once that gun goes off to signal the start of a race, it is every man for themselves. Throwing an elbow or two is totally normal in a cross country race and being covered in mud after a race just makes you feel cool.
8. You have way too many shirts from all the cross country meets you've been to
It is just too hard to resist buying a shirt at a meet. At least your collection of shirts is a cool reminder of all the places you've traveled to and all the races you've ran.
9. Your teammates are your best friends
Something about running lots of miles with people just makes you best friends. There is no better feeling than when your teammates are also your best friends.
I love cross country and think that cross country runners are some of the most hard-working and awesome people.
