You majored in what?

"I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. " - Sylvia Plath, "The Bell Jar"

I'm one of the dreaded liberal arts majors. Anytime I mention my affinity for English and journalism, I am met with the blank stares of well-meaning people who try desperately to find something kind to say. "Oh, so you're going to go to law school?" Well, no.

"So you want to be a teacher?"

Not really.

These phrases are the ones that make my eye twitch. Law school is not out of my reach. Teaching is not my nightmare. They're just not part of my plan.

If I'm honest, I don't have much of a plan.

The scary thing about liberal arts is that the paths are not linear. There is no set career for an English major. I'm stuck here wandering. I know I have passion. I yearn to communicate, and do it well. I want to express my own ideas or help others to communicate their thoughts in an eloquent way.

I know I don't have a set path right now, but I do not lose hope. I have many paths.

I am in the process of fine-tuning a set of skills that will make me more marketable in the workforce. I am developing connections with all sorts of interesting people. I am moving forward.

I am an ambitious young woman staring up at the fig tree full of opportunities, waiting to reach out and take a bite.

I am wandering, a little bit lost. I am going to be just fine.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
