You Know You're From Pensacola if...
Ashley Sekul

Pensacola is one of the greatest cities, located just inside the panhandle of Florida. It has the whitest sand, warm weather, and best seafood. There's nowhere else that has the unique lifestyle this city has to offer. Therefore, you know you're from Pensacola if...

1.Your phone number starts with 850.

A true resident will even refer to the area itself as the 850. Many will even put it in their social media bios.

2. You know not to feed the seagulls.

Tourists should all learn this very valuable lesson. If there’s one thing you don’t do on the beach, it feeds the seagulls. It will make them flock to you, and once that happens, there’s no getting rid of those pesky squealing birds.

3. You thought the dolphin water tanks had actual dolphins in them.

As a kid, you always assumed they painted those dolphins on there because there were real ones inside. Growing up was a real disappointment because you found out it was just a water tank.

4. Going on the boat or to the beach was a weekly occurrence.

My family went out on the boat every Sunday, and as a kid, it almost got boring. Weekend plans always consisted of sand and sun.

5. Winter isn’t a thing.

The longest winter usually lasts two weeks. Temperatures rarely get cold enough for long sleeves. My mom once referred to a cold front as the temperature dropping to 68.

6. Because of number 4, beach days happen in January.

No month is off limits for beach days. The unpredictable temperature changes can make any day perfect for laying out, just stay away from the icy water.

7. You will never find a better sunset.

I’ve been many places, but no sunset compares to the ones in the panhandle. I don’t know if it’s because anything looks beautiful on a beach, but you just can’t beat how picture perfect the sky is.

8. BLUE ANGELS

It’s pretty much a holiday. There’s just something so appealing about laying on beach and watching planes do insane tricks that is sure to draw a huge crowd every year.

9. Hurricanes are almost a joke.

Key word: almost. Sure you have your bad ones like Ivan and Dennis, but most times even the words category two aren’t enough to make you worried about putting up the hurricane shutters. Plus, hurricane season was always fun as a kid when the names list came out because you wanted to see if they named one after you.

10. You love crawfish boils and GOOD seafood.

Pensacola is home to some of the very best seafood restaurants, not to mention Joe Patty’s. If you’re in the mood for seafood, you have your pick of top notch restaurants. However, most people enjoy simply catching their own. Even crawfish boils are common at restaurants on the beach or just in your neighbor's backyard.

11. Once you leave, you realize it’s the greatest place you’ll ever live.

Growing up in the panhandle is often taken for granted. Leaving makes you realize that there really is nothing better than living “where people vacation.”

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
