If you’re like me and you lived in the city your whole life then I think you can relate to what I am going to talk about. You may even have similar experiences. And I think it’s all thanks to the city. The city can come with a lot of opportunity and a lot to do. Which is why it’s no surprise many cities having tourists around, especially in very known places. For example, New York City is known for having many tourists. If you take a train down to 42nd street, you’ll see a lot of them there, with their professional cameras and just recently their selfie sticks.
But since you’re a city kid, you probably don’t find yourself going to the popular areas of the city a lot, because you feel like there's no need. At least that’s what I think. If you live in the city there’s no need for you to be in those popular areas all the time, unless you work in that area, or need something from there. In my opinion I feel like there’s no big deal about popular areas like Times Square. Since I’ve been a city kid my whole life and I plan to stay one, I feel like there’s no need for me to go to such areas because there would be nothing for me to do. I could got there once or twice, just for the heck of it, but what will I benefit from it? I’m always going to be in the city, so I can always go to that area if I want. Whereas if I was a tourists I would want to go to popular areas, like Times Square and spend as much time possible to remember it.
Another thing about being a city kid is that everything is pretty convenient. For example, if you want to go meet your friend somewhere, like a mall or a cafe and you don’t have a driver license there are other methods to get to where you want to be. Public transportation is everywhere. The train or bus can help you get to where you need. Most people that live in the city use public transportation to go to work and back. It’s a lot easier for them because if they work in the city Manhattan they won’t have the hassle of finding a parking spot.
While we're on the topic of public transportation, I’d like to touch up on some things. While public transportation can be very useful and helpful to get you where you need to be, it can also be annoying for many reasons.
1- There’s always something going on with the transit system.
It just so happens to be that when you need public transportation the most it’s just your luck that your bus or train is having issues or is using a different route due to some construction ahead. So now you either have to find a different way to get there, or change trains more than once to get to where you need to be because the transit system is having issues, and it’s not the first time or the last. And of course it’s not a legitimate transit system if there aren’t a few delays in one day. So the train has to stay at the same station for a good 5 minutes or more until the train can finally move. Normally delays can be caused due to a train ahead that’s in the station already, or someone decided it would be fun to jump into the tracks, or due to the train's dispatcher. I never understood what could be so important that the train dispatcher has to make the conductor stop the whole train while we sit at a station for 5 minutes. People have places to be, things to get done, but of course we’re all stuck. But none the less you still find yourself using public transportation.
2- The schedules for the buses and trains are always off. When you realize you missed your bus just two minutes ago, you can shrug it off, or just check to see when the next one comes. But of course it’s not always what it says. Sometimes you can find yourself waiting a long time and there should’ve been at least three buses by now. But not one has stopped by. And when the bus does arrive, it can either be super crowded, so the bus skips your stop because it can’t hold any more passengers, it can be a limited so it doesn’t stop there either, or it’s not in service, so your still stuck waiting.
While all these may be just some small characteristics of being a city kid, it still makes you feel like you’re a part of something and you feel lucky that you live in such a place that has many things for you to do, and options for you to get there. Whereas if you lived in different states, cars are needed for everything. Even a quick run to the grocery store for a gallon of milk. So I’m glad I’m a city kid. It has it’s perks. Some may agree to disagree, but at the end of the day it doesn’t bother me because growing up as a city kid you learn to not let little things bother you and you be yourself.
