History has a tendency to repeat itself, especially when it comes to fashion trends. Those high-waisted jeans we often made fun of our parents for wearing are now our favorite wardrobe piece. Kelly Kapowski remains our fashion icon and trends from throughout past decades are definitely making a comeback. Don’t throw anything out — you never know when it will be back in style.
I am still waiting for the day my gaucho pants from Limited Too come back, but until then, I’m loving that the looks from the '90s are taking the main stage in fashion. Take a trip down memory lane, pull out your biggest scrunchie and comfiest flannel to join in the fashion throw back.
Here are some of my favorite trends to return:
1. Choker
Chokers are back. They are no longer just found on our favorite '90s celebrities and television shows. They are now a huge statement piece in 2015.
2. Skater skirts and knee high socks.
We loved the skater skirt and knee high sock look in "Clueless,"and now it’s back. Whether Cher’s classic plaid or a regular solid we are all becoming guilty of being outfit repeaters.
3. Crop tops.
The crop top has become a staple of summer trends. "Saved by the Bell" made me love the crop top and bralette fashion, paired with denim high-waisted shorts, the look seemed timeless, and I have definitely attempted to copy it.
4. Jean jackets.
A denim jacket is the perfect thing to add to an outfit. The jacket can make any outfit more casual and can instantly make a nighttime outfit perfect for a day out.
5. Flannel shirts.
The perfect comfy-casual top. With the return of fall, flannel shirts reappear in time for Halloween and apple-picking, proving they never go out of style.
6. Ripped jeans.
To my Grandpa’s dismay, my favorite part of my wardrobe. Distressed and comfortable each time your foot pokes through one of the holes while putting them on, you start to love them even more.
7. Off the shoulder tops.
Loved for their ability to make any outfit look more upscale and classy. The slight peep of the shoulder can be made dressy or casual and is definitely a '90s flashback.
Fashion’s cyclical tendency is important, because whether it be an old jean jacket or a pair of gaucho pants, trends and pieces bring back memories. The return of a trend is connected to favorite musicians, television shows and other icons. It allows us to see how fashion has grown and developed throughout the years, and how we have evolved along with it.
The next time you go to make fun of that picture of your mom sporting what may seem like a crazy ensemble, think before you speak because you may find yourself wearing a very similar outfit in just a year.
