Lake High School of Uniontown, Ohio -- a high school that holds a special place in my heart. This is where memories were created for four of the most crucial years in our life. This small town high school has made an impact on me and I can assure you, made an impact on many others as well. From the athletic events, musicals and dances, LHS has made lasting memories that are so unique, you'll only understand if you want there. So, without further ado, let us begin. You know you went to Lake High School when...
1. You had to wait for cows to cross the street while driving home.
While not everyone experienced this...this is a thing. I promise. It has happened.
2. The other team during sporting events dressed up as farmers.
As someone who went to Lake and in fact was not a farmer, this was actually quite funny. The opposing team thinks that we are farmers merely because we have a few corn fields around us. We also have a Sheetz. Which leads me to my next point...
3. Sheetz was the greatest thing to ever happen to high school students.
Sleepovers turned into Sheetz runs and the best hang out spot became the tiny dining area inside of the establishment. I won't lie, even after I graduated from LHS, this is still the place to see everyone you never wanted to see again. So if you you're back in town and trying to keep a low profile, then don't go to Sheetz. You'll see everyone and their mother.
4. Shopping for spirit gear is easy because all you had to do was find something patriotic.
Need to find something red, white and blue for sporting events? Simple, just go find an American flag and you're set. I cannot tell you how many Fourth of July outfits I have because of the numerous shirts I obtained from LHS.
5. Pep rallies were the least peppiest thing to attend.
Seriously, our pep rallies really lacked the pep. Aside from the yelling of L-A-K-E, our pep rallies were less than peppy. Think of a pep rally you see in movies and then think just the opposite to understand how dull our pep rallies truly were. At least we got out of class though, right?
6. Your mascot was a man in a blue morph suit.
This was always one of the most upsetting things to me. Basically, I could go to a generic party supply store, buy a blue morph suit and pose as our mascot at football games. Why didn't we have a man in a blue streak costume? This question still haunts me to this day.
7. You flip through the yearbook and there's at least 10 different individuals with the last name of Yoder.
If you ever wanted to find someone in the yearbook, then you always had to flip pretty far because there were so many individuals with the last name Yoder, Miller, etc., mainly because they owned half of Hartville. Or if in conversation you were talking about one of the Millers or Yoders, it was hard to identify who was who because there were so many. Are you talking about Peggy or Daniel Yoder? (Names were changed for the sake of this article.)
8. You couldn't wait for the month of March so you could hear Mr. Tobin's New Jersey accent.
I must admit, Mr. Tobin was one of the greatest things about Lake. I cannot merely summarize Mr. Tobin with his accent. He was known for much more, such as knowing everyone's names, coming to all the schools events, etc. Mr. Tobin was a truly incredible VP and will now be an amazing superintendent. Don't agree? Get out.
9. You knew the greatest thing about Lake was you.
Please, readers, tell me you remember those shirts from elementary school that read, "What's great about Lake? Me!" If you don't remember, then just take a look through a few yearbooks and I can guarantee you will spot someone wearing the shirt.
Honestly, the shirt sounds conceited, but the people were what was great about Lake. I met some of my best friends, mentors and inspirations there. The positive atmosphere I was surrounded with every day made me want to participate in school and not just hold on until graduation. Without Lake, I wouldn't be who I am today.
Are you proud to be a blue streak? Yes, I am.
