You Know You Grew Up In The 90's When...
The Kernel

The 90's, the decade that kids had the best childhood toys, games, artists, and shows. Webkinz, Neopets, Hacky-sacks. Though it seems it was just last year, students in high school now were born in the 2000's. These were the years that shaped us and gave us fond memories of our childhood. Lets take a walk down memory lane and reminisce. Here are some things you'll remember if you were a 90's baby.

  1. The only segregation you knew about was if you were a fan of N-sync or the Backstreet Boys.
  2. Wonder balls, need I say more?
  3. You played with a tied piece of yarn and tried to make the Eiffel tower with it
  4. MASH told you that you’d live in a New York City mansion with Jesse McCartney and your 10 kids and pet raccoon, driving a go cart, working as a janitor
  5. You were thankful your mother was a better mom to you than you were to your Tomogatchi, since it died every time you forgot to feed it.
  6. Dankaroo’s were your favorite afterschool snack.
  7. And that strange accordion/ porcupine like thing your mom put around your ponytail or bun.
  8. You felt like a star every time you logged on to your AOL.
  9. You owned every single color of milky pens
  10. Hit clips will always be better than ipods, and you can still sing all the S Club 7 songs.
  11. The only Pokémon’s in your house were on your trading cards.
  12. You’d go to the movie store with your mom and your friend that was staying that weekend to rent a movie. (And you opened the box to make sure the right VHS was inside)
  13. The best games you played all started with S: Spyro, Sonic and Sims.
  14. When Tony Hawk Underground wasn’t working on the Nintendo 64, you’d take the game out and blow out the dust.
  15. Book fairs were one of the few reasons you got excited to go to school.
  16. Your cousins locked you in the dark bathroom and made you say Bloody Mary three times in the mirror.
  17. Rocket Power, Zoomboomafoo, All Grown Up, CatDog, Full House, Legends of the Hidden Temple, and Hey Arnold were your all time favorites.
  18. You never made it to Oregon because you kept dying of Typhoid fever.
  19. You looked at Highlights magazine in the waiting room at the doctor’s office.
  20. Going through an entire role of bubble tape in a day was a regular occurrence.
  21. When you got the Rugrats Gone Wild movie and had the scratch and sniff stickers to go along with it.
  22. The most angering moment when you wanted to see what movies were on that you could watch so you put on the TV guide, but got distracted and missed your channels that you were checking.
  23. You regularly smoked your candy cigarettes.
  24. That hot pink rabbit’s foot key chain was the luckiest thing you ever owned.
  25. You did mad libs to pass the time on long car rides.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
