You are a history major. You have a fascination and passion for the happenings of the past and you want to study its long list of mysteries. As you delve further into your studies, you will gain knowledge investigating people, events, places, and institutions of the past. From the ancient Greeks to World War II, you will learn about it all. Along for the ride will be other history majors who share your enthusiasm. There are a lot of things you will have in common with your peers. We all have a love for history and we have all spent hours with our extensive list or essays and books to read for homework. You might even relate to the majority of things on this list.
1. The mere mention of a historical figure's name can turn you into a human encyclopedia on the subject.
You are like the historian's equivalent of a Beatlemaniac. *coughs* King Henry VIII *coughs*
2. You complain about the inaccuracies in historical dramas.
Raise your hand if you cringe while watching "Braveheart"!
3. You still watch those historical dramas because you love the time period they are focused on.
What can I say? I'm a sucker for the love story part of "Braveheart."
4. You complain that the History Channel isn't airing enough biopics and documentaries.
Where did the history part of that channel go?
5. When you tell someone you are a history major, they might think of this:
5. You go straight for the historical section in any bookstore...
Even though you know you can't afford another book.
6. Your friends see you with a new book and ask:
"Is that for a class or just because you have no impulse control when you go into a bookstore?" Oops!
7. Nothing compares to a history pun.
8. You memorize dates by the events which happened on or around them.
You have read so many books and spent countless hours doing research that it is now impossible to forget them.
9. You don't get e-books because you can't fill them with multi-colored post-it notes with annotations scribbled on them.
Annotations never get the recognition they deserve.
10. Your friends never ask you about your favorite points in history because once you start talking you might not be able to stop.
So, if you're surrounded by friends who are biology and math majors, just remember that there is a whole department of history on campus which most likely can relate to you. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't expect anything to come from your bachelor's degree in history. Keep your head held high because you are not alone. These four years of college will be a valuable part of your past and present which will help you succeed in the future.
